ANTHONY Griffin has steered Penrith’s season back on track, now he is set to be rewarded with a contract extension.
The Sunday Telegraph can reveal Griffin is closing in on a two-year upgrade to ensure he remains at the foot of the mountains until at least the end of the 2020 season.
The former Brisbane mentor still has one year on his contract, but Penrith officials are keen to extend his stay at the club.
Griffin led the Panthers to the second week of the finals in his first season at the club in 2016, while he has placed them back on track this year after a slow start.
INTERRUPTED: Origin wrecks Dragons’ momentum
Penrith, a team hailed as premiership favourites in the off-season, claimed two wins in the opening nine rounds to sit in the NRL cellar.
This prompted increased pressure on Griffin, whose coaching style came into question.
But on the back of four straight victories, the Panthers have reinvigorated their premiership campaign.
Now Griffin is set to benefit with a new deal. It’s understood Penrith officials view him as the club’s long-term coach and the man to deliver the Western Sydney club its third title.
