Penrith sex tape saga

The NRL’s horror off-season erupted on Friday night in another sex scandal, with a Penrith player now under investigation for his involvement in two videos.

The Daily Telegraph was told on Friday night that Panthers general manager of football Phil Gould was contacted late on Friday by Karyn Murphy from the NRL integrity unit to inform the club of the claims.

It is understood the allegations relate to an incident last year, where the player was allegedly involved in two sex tape videos.

The Daily Telegraph has viewed the videos that have begun to circulate on social media.

One video shows the man allegedly calling the women a “ratbag” and allegedly pushing her on the back of the head during a sex act.

In another video the same person allegedly grabs a woman around the throat during a sex act.

There is no suggestion of criminal wrongdoing by anyone in the video.

It is understood the reason the player’s name has not been revealed at this point is because his face was not in view, although a distinguishing tattoo ultimately led to the investigation.

Another man is also involved in an alleged sex act with a woman.

Australian Rugby League chairman Peter Beattie on Friday night told The Daily Telegraph: “I haven’t been briefed on it. I don’t know the details. I will wait until I am briefed.”

Penrith also put out a statement that read: “Penrith Panthers has been made aware of a video allegedly involving a Panthers player.

“The club is co-operating with the NRL Integrity Unit and will be making no further comment at this time.”

The Panthers take on Parramatta on Saturday in the final preseason trial but it is expected the alleged player could be stood down from the trial pending the NRL’s investigation.

This latest incident comes in the wake of a horror off-season for the game that culminated this week in tough new penalties.

The NRL has stood down Jack de Belin and Dylan Walker, who are both facing serious charges involving allegations of violence against women.

De Belin has pleaded not guilty to an aggravated sexual assault charge while Walker has also pleaded not guilty to allegations of domestic violence.

Former Parramatta star Jarryd Hayne has also pleaded not guilty to an aggravated sexual assault charge over an incident in the Hunter last year, while Ben Barba was recently sacked by North Queensland after CCTV footage showed him allegedly attacking his partner at a Townsville Casino. Barba has not been charged.

NRL boss Todd Greenberg has promised violence against women would no longer be tolerated in the game, and players involved in lewd videos would also cop heavy punishment.

The NRL on Friday showing leniency to Canterbury’s star recruit Dylan Napa who was not stood down for his involvement in three sex tape incidents that were leaked from several years ago.

Walker case adjourned

It is estimated the financial cost to the game after the disastrous events is in the vicinity of $10 million.

Greenberg declared this week that the game could no longer sit back and allow the game’s image to be tarnished by allegations of poor behaviour.

Beattie also defended himself against criticism he had too much to say in the media in relation to de Belin’s case that could potentially impact the star Dragons forward’s pending court case.

“For us to run away and hide from the debate would be cowardice,” Beattie said at Thursday’s media conference.
