Todd Greenberg has been given a stay of execution with the coronavirus delaying an announcement on the future of the NRL’s chief executive.

Greenberg’s fate was to be decided at an ARL Commission meeting on Thursday night but that is now likely to be put on the backburner as the game deals with the impending doom of the coronavirus.

The commission meeting will go ahead but dealing with the fallout of the coronavirus will take precedence.

“My honest answer to that is I’ve had a hell of a 48 hours dealing with (coronavirus),” Greenberg said.

“The board will meet next week, I’ve said this consistently, my contract does not finish until the end of this year. I have a lot of work to do. Ultimately (a decision on my future is) up to the board.

“I have a lot bigger fish to fry just dealing with what’s placed in front of us.”

A three-person subcommittee of chairman Peter V'landys and commissioners Gary Weiss and Wayne Pearce were set to hand down their recommendation about Greenberg’s future to the board this week. Greenberg’s contract expires at the end of this year after a two year option on his more than $1 million a year contract lapsed last month.

V'landys raised a few eyebrows when he revealed some clubs found Greenberg arrogant.

“People will make their own assessments of me,” Greenberg said.

“Peter and I have spoken individually maybe 20 times in the last three hours.

“The chairman and I are in constant dialogue about this issue. We are in lock-step agreement on the direction,”

Greenberg met the three-person subcommittee last week to undergo a performance review and outline his vision for the game’s future. He has been in charge since taking over from David Smith in 2016.
