VETERAN Parramatta forward Frank Pritchard has officially ended his successful career spanning 15 seasons and four clubs.
Pritchard informed his Eels teammates at training on Friday that he won’t be taking up the club’s offer to fill one of the two final roster spots.
It comes as the Samoan international didn’t return to training on Wednesday, sparking speculation he could retire.
Pritchard’s contract with the Eels expired last season, but he had been given the opportunity to return in 2018.
He recently revealed he won’t take up the offer if he feels like he can’t contribute.
Pritchard previously said he will use holidays post the World Cup to weigh up his future before making a decision when he returns to pre-season training in early January.
However, he didn’t attend his scheduled return date to training on Wednesday and Parramatta officials remained in the dark about his movements.
Pritchard, though, always said 2018 would be his final season in the NRL.
After stints with Penrith, Canterbury, Hull FC and Parramatta, he is happy to walk away feeling accomplished with what he has achieved.
“I don’t just want to go around and make up the numbers and be a fossil,” Pritchard said.
“I’m confident enough that I can fit into the team and do my job, but we’ll see what happens.
“I’m very grateful to Parra for giving me an opportunity and a chance.
“I’ve always told them I want to put the club in a position to look after themselves first and foremost.
“If there is a spot for me there next year, then I’m very thankful to the club.
“I’ve been around the game a long time and I told BA (Brad Arthur) I’m just happy to work hard and play in whatever position he needs me.
“Whether it’s coming off the bench or being there for the young boys, I’m happy to do that role.”
Pritchard played 280 NRL games, while he played 32 Tests for New Zealand and Samoa.
