Fallen rugby league star Jarryd Hayne turns his hand to soccer

Former NRL superstar and NFL hopeful Jarryd Hayne will turn his hand to a new football code in the coming weeks as he takes up soccer.

Fallen rugby league star Jarryd Hayne is set for another code switch with the Dally M winner turning his hand to soccer.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal Hayne has been registered to play soccer for a local club on the Central Coast with the anticipation he could play as early as today. Hayne has been living in the Central Coast recently and had been training with local rugby league club Woy Woy.

It will be the fourth football code which the 31-year-old will play.

His decorated rugby league career was interrupted by a stint with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL and a brief showing for Fiji on the sevens circuit before a return to league after he missed selection in the 2016 Olympic team.

It is understood Hayne has been registered to play for East Gosford division eight men’s open team. He has tasted Origin success helping pack out ANZ Stadium, played in front of sold out NFL stadiums in the USA but it is a humble suburban ground where one of the most marketable sportsmen in Australian history will step onto a field for the first time this year.

Hayne could line-up for East Gosford as early as Sunday when the side play Ourimbah at Hylton Moore Oval at 2:55pm.

East Gosford officials did not return calls.

Hayne – who is a two-time Dally M player of the year – featured in 15 first grade games for the Eels last year.

Hayne appeared in court last month to face a second allegation he caused actual bodily harm during an alleged rape of a Hunter Valley woman. He appeared briefly in Newcastle Local Court.

Hayne had his bail conditions varied. He is now to live at an address in Umina Beach and is to report to Woy Woy police station once a day on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
