Queensland enforcer Josh McGuire’s move to North Queensland has been confirmed, after the Cowboys announced on Monday they have signed the star forward on a four year deal.
In one of the biggest shocks of the pre-season, the Broncos lock will make an immediate switch to the Cowboys, where it is now likely he will finish his NRL career.
The 28-year-old was one year into a four-year contract with the Broncos, but Brisbane are understood to have agreed to the release given the amount of forward depth coming through their ranks.
The Cowboys meanwhile wanted to boost their own forward stocks, especially as veteran prop Matt Scott fights back from a neck injury.
Coach Paul Green has worked with McGuire at both the Queensland Academy of Sport and the Broncos Academy and was looking forward to reconnecting with him in Townsville.
“His development over the years has really impressed me and to reconnect and have the opportunity to work with him again is something I’m personally really looking forward to,” he said.
“I’m really excited about what Josh can bring to the Cowboys.”
McGuire will next year combine his experience with the likes of Jason Taumalolo, Coen Hess, Jordan McLean, Gavin Cooper and Scott.
