Who is the quickest in the NRL? Bulldogs flyer Reimis Smith doesn’t want to be left behind

The NRL is blessed with some of the fastest talent to ever hit the sport — but while Bronson Xerri recently joined the greased lightning crew, one Bulldogs star doesn’t want to be left behind.

Who is the fastest man in Rugby League?

With a healthy hint of arrogance befitting his bloodline, Remis Smith has declared he wants to challenge the likes Josh Addo-Carr, James Roberts and Bronson Xerri for the title of the NRL’s fastest man.

Staking his claim as a genuine rugby league flyer last week when he chased down Souths speedster Corey Allan in a 90m save, Smith is hoping to soar with the ball in his hands and join the NRL’s “catch me if you can club’’ when the Bulldogs clash with the Cowboys tomorrow night.

“I was out in the open on the weekend but I was on the wrong side of the ball,’’ Smith said.

“I would have preferred it if someone was trying to catch me because I haven’t had a lot of opportunity to prove my speed so far this year.’’

While his uncle Anthony Mundine claimed to be the “greatest” and his father Tyrone proved himself as one of the toughest, Smith has his sights set on going step for step with the likes of Melbourne winger Addo-Carr.

“Quick?’’ Smith said.

“Yeah I am quick. I’ll back myself against anyone. Those guys (Addo-Carr, Roberts and Xerri) are pretty fast, but I have a bit of speed too. I’d have a shot.’’

A long range try scoring specialist as a junior, Smith — also the cousin of Blake Ferguson — has had few chances to fly in the NRL since bursting onto the scene with three tries against the Dragons last year.

Smith’s only other opportunity to hit top gear came on Good Friday when he chased down Allan.

“I need to get an opportunity to show my full potential,’’ Smith said.

“I am just waiting for my opportunity to see what I can do. All those guys (Addo-Carr, Roberts and Xerri) are so quick so I really don’t know. I’d have to get the chance to see. I am taller than a lot of other wingers and fast for my weight. Maybe it looks like I am not running as fast but I am taking ground pretty quick.’’

The 196cm winger is hoping to pile on the pace at ANZ Stadium tomorrow night when the Bulldogs attempt to upset the Cowboys to claim their second win of the year.

Smith admitted he had struggled to shine during the Bulldogs’ tough start to the season.

“I am hoping to get into the clear to show everyone (how fast I am) really soon,’’ Smith said.

“I am still trying to find my feet a bit and the team is too. We are still a work in progress and there haven’t been too many opportunities in attack this year. I’d love to be able to make a few breaks and score a few tries.

“I am hoping that it is not too far away and there have been some good signs for the team.’’

Smith wants to repay the Bulldogs for giving him his NRL start by signing a long-term deal with the club.

“I am not off-contract until next year,’’ Smith said.

“But I am hoping to be here long after that. They showed faith in me and I’d like to be loyal.’’
