CANTERBURY five-eighth Kieran Foran would be prepared to take a 70 per cent pay cut – worth a monster $2 million — to play another three seasons in the NRL, but it won’t be at the Bulldogs.

The Daily Telegraph has been told interest in Foran, who comes off contract at Belmore after this season, has been modest despite posting some impressive statistics this season.

Foran has already rejected an offer of a one-year deal from Canterbury for next season that was a base salary worth $300,000, with another $100,000 in possible incentives.

The Bulldogs have now withdrawn the offer, any deal now off-the-table.

It is understood Foran – who has just turned 30 - wanted a longer deal than the one-season offer from Canterbury.

Foran has played the past three years at Canterbury on an annual salary of $1 million, making him one of the highest-paid players in the game, but could now play on for around $300,000-$350,000, a season.

That is a drop of a whopping $700,000 a season if Foran is able to secure a desired three-year deal.

Through a wretched run with injuries, primarily his shoulder and ankle, Foran has played just 37 of a possible 62 games in almost three seasons at Belmore.

Foran, though, has shown his class this season and is clearly Canterbury’s best player. He is also among the best players in the NRL coming off contract after this season.

In his 11 matches this year, Foran scored two tries and has 10 try assists, two linebreaks and 12 linebreak assists, the most since 2015 when playing for Manly.

Foran has been linked with Newcastle, Wests Tigers and Manly but clubs are yet to lodge any formal offers. A move to Newcastle would reunite Foran with his best mate, Knights halfback Mitchell Pearce.

There has been some interest shown at Manly, where Foran played his best footy under Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler. But the club may not have sufficient room in their salary cap for next season.

Despite his injury history, a fit Foran could present wonderful value if signed for $300,000 to $350,000 a season.

One source close to Foran said: “He is still Canterbury’s best player. He is experienced but hasn’t got a club next season.”

New Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett isn’t commenting on recruitment and retention at his new club.

The money Canterbury had kept aside for Foran will now be channelled toward another player.

Just last month, Foran told the Sydney media he had endured a “couple of injury-ravaged years at Canterbury” but would “love to stay on” at Belmore.

Privately, Canterbury genuinely hopes Foran can secure another club.

Foran came from the field injured during last Sunday’s match against Wests Tigers but later returned. He has been named five-eighth for Canterbury’s match against New Zealand this Sunday at ANZ Stadium.

They haven’t made him an offer yet but Canterbury is monitoring whether Brisbane sack forward Tevita Pangai Jr. They also have an interest in Broncos captain Pat Carrigan among a list of potential targets.

Brisbane’s Bird has been shopped to several NRL clubs, including the Bulldogs, with the Broncos offering to pay part of his and his $975,000-a-year deal.
