Dylan Napa set to be suspended for infamous sex tapes
Canterbury look set to bear the punishment handed down to Dylan Napa for the infamous sex tapes made while the Bulldogs recruit was playing for the Sydney Roosters.
Canterbury recruit Dylan Napa is facing a suspension for his involvement in two explicit sex tapes.
NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg strongly hinted on Tuesday that the former Sydney Roosters prop would be sanctioned, despite the lewd sext tapes being filmed five years ago, after they were posted online late last month.
There are suggestions Napa’s ban could span anywhere from two to six games, which would elicit a fierce response from the Bulldogs.
Asked had the NRL reached a conclusion on the Napa videos, Greenberg said: “Not yet, no. I have asked the Integrity Unit to try and complete that piece of work quickly.
“It is a pretty busy place at the moment, our Integrity Unit. They’re not a big organisation of men and women but they doing some good work.
“We will get to the bottom of that as quickly as we can and then we put out a solution.”
It is understood the Integrity Unit has shown Greenberg a portion of its official report.
“I haven’t read it in its entirety but what I have seen is damage to the game. And where damage to the game comes, there will be consequences,” Greenberg said.
In one of the now infamous tapes, Napa refers to himself as “Big Papi”.
Bulldogs chief executive Andrew Hill was saying little about the Napa drama.
“I don’t think it would be appropriate to comment while the investigation is ongoing,” Hill said.
Sources close to Canterbury, however, say the club would fight any suspension.
Club management appear comfortable with Napa being fine or offered educational training — but not a suspension.
“It happened five years ago when he was at another club,” a source said. “It would be difficult to accept.”
Some inside Bulldogs management are also seeking to discover whether any club or official knew about the tape when it made five years ago.
Canterbury is privately claiming South Sydney star Sam Burgess was not sanctioned or suspended when linked to a sexting scandal back in September.
Greenberg was unconcerned Napa was yet to play a single game for Canterbury, his new club.
“That’s not my primary concern. It’s the same as the Cowboys (with Ben Barba’s sacking), it’s probably a little harsher for them to lose a player that has never laced on a boot for them,” Greenberg said.
“That’s the real difficulty of recruitment and retention for clubs.
“My message to clubs is that when you’re buying and selling players, look equally at the values as opposed to the skill set. I think they should be assessed in equal priority.”
Napa is due to finally face the Sydney media on Wednesday where he will be grilled about the tapes.
There was speculation of another tape emerging on social media involving two high profile players and the use of drugs.
The Daily Telegraph though has seen the tape and cannot identify any of the alleged suspects.
