MATCH REPORT: Missed chances in stunning draw
The Baby Broncos found a famous win against a woeful Cronulla side last weekend so were up against it in the flashier Warriors team.
The homeside hung for the entire 90 minutes and it was just their field goal attempts which let them down in the end.
Disclaimer: Yes I watched the match, yes player-X was that bad/good in my opinion, no I won’t change my ratings because we saw different things.
Let’s get cracking.
Anthony Milford – 6
Seemed to do nothing but kick the ball last night. Started the game with a monster bomb which bamboozled the Warriors and led to the Broncos first try. A clever grubber kick in the second half set up Darius Boyd’s try. But someone needs to remind him there are other fifth-play options than the high kick.
He needs to work on his field goal attempts though, missing all three during extra time.
Jamayne Isaako – 4
Hasn’t played much footy in the past month because of personal reasons and his lack of game time showed. The Warriors ran riot over Brisbane’s right hand edge, consisting of Isaako and rookier Xavier Coates, like a hot knife through butter.
Kotoni Staggs – 6
Made a knock-on at dummy-half during the first half but made up for it in his strong attack. A clutch conversion kick in the 66th minute gave the Broncos a two-point lead in the dying minutes of the game.
Herbie Farnworth – 5
Herbie wasn’t quite fully loaded against the Warriors. He made some great takes under the high ball and some powerful carries but was another Baby Bronco caught out in defence. He finished the game with 108 running metres and three tackle busts but two errors and a missed tackle marred his evening.
Xavier Coates – 4
It was just his second NRL game and the inexperience showed. The youngster was caught out in defence at times and a missed tackle on Adam Blair led to the Warriors first try of the match. The kid has plenty of talent but there’s a lot of room for improvement. New Zealand’s game plan to target his edge was evident through his 19 tackles and two missed tackles.
Darius Boyd – 7
Boyd had one of his best games of the year, running for 104m and just the two missed tackle on flash-footed Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. The skipper even found a rare four-pointer in the second half. He had the chance to seal the game in extra time but knocked the ball on 30m out from the tryline.
Jake Turpin – 4
Probably best if he sticks to playing hooker. Turpin made some costly errors in the No.7 jersey. He threw a terrible pass just metres out from their tryline just before halftime which knocked all the wind out of Brisbane’s sails as they threatened to score. And a forward pass with 20 minutes to go in the game was another momentum killer.
Matthew Lodge – 6
Got himself a nice little pay rise and contract extension this week after knocking back an offer by his opposition tonight. And he pledged his loyalty to Brisbane in emphatic fashion, running for 167m from 21 hit ups. Made 29 tackles on top of it as well.
Andrew McCullough – 6
Solid in defence and always reliable but was hooked in the second half for the much livelier James Segeyaro. Made 27 tackles and had a few good dummy-half runs but didn’t have the same attacking flair as Segeyaro.
Payne Haas – 8
This kid doesn’t stop. A first half try saw him steamroll over top of three Warriors players. Add on 168m, three tackle busts, a linebreak and 35 tackles. He made an incredible try-saving tackle to stop the Warriors from scoring the matchwinner in extra time as well.
Alex Glenn – 6
Great cover tackle in the first half on Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and a few good carries. Finished the game with 92 running metres, one tackle break and one offload. He made a team-high 37 tackles
Tevita Pangai Jr – 7
Another one who was given a pay rise and contract extension this week and Seibold would have been left sweating on whether it was all worth it. Was dominant in attack, running for 127m, but two moments of madness threatened to hand the win to the Warriors.
He gave away a penalty with five minutes to go which allowed the Warriors to take the game to extra time. Another late penalty gave the visitors perfect field position to take a field goal but didn’t capitalise.
Thomas Flegler – 6
Had an OK night out with six hit-ups for 53m. Made 15 tackles in a solid effort at Suncorp Stadium.
James Segeyaro – 5
Was the spark the Broncos needed in the second half. Ran for 25m from dummy-half, including two offloads to give the Broncos some forward momentum down the middle of the field. He shanked a field goal during extra time instead of passing it to Milford which could well have cost them the game.
Joe Ofahengaue – 6
Backed up from the bruising Origin clash and started off the bench. Was reliable as always finishing the game with 53 running metres and and one offload.
David Fifita – 6
Only came on in the 60th minute and almost went from hero to zero in the space of 15 minutes. He scored an incredible try with his first touch of the ball. Palmed off three Warriors players to sprint 20m to the tryline.
But a terrible option kick on the last tackle with six minutes to go gave the Warriors a seven-tackle set which sent them down the other end to almost score a winning try.
Patrick Carrigan – 6
Was another one of Brisbane’s strong forward pack. Ran for 97m from 13 carries with a tackle break thrown in for good measure. Finished the game with 25 tackles.
