Mal Meninga says Brisbane and South Sydney cannot waste more time on coach swap that should happen now

Mal Meninga knows the strain of the Brisbane-South Sydney coaching saga will be weighing on Wayne Bennett, despite his frosty public persona, and called on both clubs to end the drama.

Mal Meninga says the coach swap between the Broncos and Rabbitohs must happen for 2019.

South Sydney are continuing to monitor whether there is a way to install Wayne Bennett as coach one year before the end of his Broncos contract, which would leave Anthony Seibold to take over at Red Hill one year early.

Bennett has made little effort to publicly mask the strained nature of the dealings he has with Broncos CEO Paul White and club chairman Karl Morris since he returned to Brisbane last week.

“I just think it needs to have a swap,’’ Meninga said.

“Something has got to happen. He has got to (go to) Souths and Anthony Seibold comes up to coach the Broncos, I’d suggest.

“But I don’t know (what will happen).’’

Meninga, the Kangaroos coach who has an association with Bennett stretching back to his teenage days when he was at the Queensland Police Academy, said the public did not have an accurate read on Bennett’s personality because of the facade he has cultivated.

“You would have seen a bit of footage where the Broncos scored a few tries and he got really excited. That’s Wayne Bennett,’’ Meninga said in an interview at the Queensland Sports Awards on Wednesday night to mark his elevation to the Hall of Fame legend category of inductees.

“What he delivers from a persona point of view publicly is totally different to what he is as a person.’’

Meninga said his hero in life has been his late father Norman, but paid credit to Bennett’s assistance of his football career at Souths in Brisbane and then Canberra for one season.

Bennett “could see something’’ in him as a footballer, Meninga said.
