Broncos fine Payne Haas $10k for traffic offences — but he will still face Canberra

Boom Brisbane prop Payne Haas has been hit by another substantial club fine — but it won’t stop Broncos coach Anthony Seibold from naming the teenager in his squad to face Canberra on Sunday.

Payne Haas will be selected for the Broncos’ match on Sunday despite being fined $10,000 by the club for traffic offences.

Haas was charged with driving when his license had expired and with scrolling on his mobile phone at a red traffic light.

The boom 19-year-old prop attended a hearing at the Ipswich Magistrates Court which prevented him from training with the Broncos, but he will be selected for Sunday’s important clash with the Raiders in Canberra.

“In addition to the court’s penalty, the Brisbane Broncos have imposed a $10,000 fine on Payne,’’ the Broncos said in a statement.

“He has also volunteered to undertake a safe driving course once he regains his driver’s licence. The Broncos have worked closely with the NRL integrity unit throughout the legal process.’’

In February, Haas was fined $20,000 by the Broncos and stood down for the first four premiership rounds for failing to co-operate with the NRL Integrity Unit investigation into an incident involving family members.

Broncos coach Anthony Seibold trained halves Anthony Milford and Kodi Nikorima and fullback Darius Boyd at their customary positions, in line with his defences in recent weeks of the trio’s places in his side.

Centre James Roberts trained away from the team again in his recovery from an Achilles injury.

It suggested Roberts is unlikely to return for the Raiders game, although there are still training sessions before the match.

The NSW Origin centre was in deep conversation with Seibold as they walked 50m together after the session.

Matt Gillett is expected to be cleared to play, but did not train because of a concussion which stopped him from returning for the second half of Brisbane’s 22-16 loss last week to Wests Tigers.

Seibold maintained last week that as a whole his team was improving.

It was a view endorsed by Penrith general manager Phil Gould in a newspaper column in which Gould maintained the Broncos were still a 2019 premiership chance needing experience both “good and bad’’ to many of their players to add needed knowledge.

Seibold said none of the Broncos were “feeling sorry for themselves’’ despite their setbacks, with two losses in the last two minutes to the Dragons and Tigers.

“We feel like we made some progress in the right direction — four of our five games we have shown some positive signs but we didn’t get the results,’’ he said.

“The young guys are getting better and the big thing I’ve been working with is the little things at training.’’
