Broncos coach takes full responsibility for record 59-0 defeat to Sydney Roosters

Broncos coach Anthony Seibold has taken full responsibility for the club’s second record defeat in their last five outings as Brisbane battle through the darkest period in their history.

Broncos coach Anthony Seibold denied his team is mentally soft as he took full responsibility for Brisbane’s humiliating 59-0 loss to the Roosters.

The Broncos are embroiled in the darkest period in their 32-year history after suffering woeful 58-0 and 59-0 defeats to Parramatta and the Roosters respectively in the space of just five games.

Not a single Brisbane forward ran for 100 metres in the Suncorp cakewalk as Roosters bench prop Lindsay Collins, an unwanted Bronco, rubbed salt into the wounds with a try and 240 metres in a rampaging display.

The Roosters’ class and experience showed the Broncos everything they don’t have, leaving Seibold shattered as he hit back at suggestions his players lack the mental fortitude to be an NRL force.

“I take responsibility,” Seibold said. “I put out a young side, it was the best side we could come up with in the circumstances with injuries.

“I don’t think we are mentally weak, but there’s some big lessons.

“We are trying to build something sustainable. I can’t offer any excuses, we picked the best side we have available, I feel for our members and supporters, the two times we have been towelled up (in the past two weeks), it’s been men against boys.

“We have $4 million of guys on the sideline, we have a young team and this is part of their development, but I felt as though we were bullied the last two weeks.”

Seibold said he would consider changes for this Thursday’s clash against Manly, lamenting his side’s commitment without the ball as the Roosters piled on 10 tries.

“I didn’t think the ride would be this bumpy that’s for sure,” he said.

“The Roosters are the premiers, but under the blowtorch we didn’t handle the pressure, we have a disappointed group in there.

“If you can’t look at the bloke beside you, you have to look at yourself, my job is work out collectively how to turn this around.

“We’ve come out of COVID and we haven’t fired a shot, but I haven’t lost belief in this group.”
