Brisbane’s search for a high-level assistant coach has hit a roadblock with Kevin Walters and Stephen Kearney unlikely starters for the role.

The former Warriors coach has been linked with a potential move to become Brisbane’s assistant coach but it is understood the 48-year-old is weighing up his options elsewhere.

Walters has publicly announced he would be “happy to help” his former club if called upon to assist coach Anthony Seibold in lifting the spirits of the young, dejected playing group.

He has even received the backing of Broncos chairman Karl Morris.

However, the former Broncos legend and current Queensland Maroons coach has yet to join the ranks at Red Hill.

One school of thought is Walters, who missed out on nabbing the head coaching role, has nothing to gain from accepting an assistants role although he remains the favourite for the top job if Seibold is axed.

Seibold said last week that he had reached out to Walters last Thursday, but insisted it was not to discuss a formal job offer.

“I feel really well supported by our assistant coaches,” Seibold said at the time. “Peter Gentle and Kurt Richards do a really good job.

“They are very diligent and hardworking, both have great experience.

“I spoke to ‘Kevvie’ (on Thursday), not about a job, but I reached out and had a chat.

“We have always had a really strong relationship.

“As you all know, there is a COVID restriction, so that’s one of the reasons Corey Parker (forwards coach) can’t come into the group.

“He is working in the media so we can’t bring anyone in from outside our group.

“Steve Kearney is a name that has been mentioned, but we have Peter Ryan on two days a week and I feel really well supported by Peter and Kurt.”

Speaking on Fox League on Saturday, Walters said the young group of players appeared confused on the field and lacked direction.

“It seems to me they all feel that they know what they have to do, but they don’t actually go and do it for whatever reason,” Walters said.

“They’re a talented group of players.

“The job of the coach and all the staff there is to unlock the keys to those players and get them moving in the right direction.”
