Brisbane winger Jesse Arthars could make debut in NRL opener against Cowboys

With Brisbane hoping to finally end their hunt for that elusive premiership, coach Anthony Seibold is ready to unleash the Broncos’ best young talent in the season opener against North Queensland.

Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold has given his clearest indication yet that exciting young speedster Jesse Arthars will make his club debut next week.

The 21-year-old was spotted training on the right wing alongside the main squad at Red Hill as the club begins preparations for next Friday’s season opener in Townsville.

Star playmaker Anthony Milford was rested for the day while Jamil Hopoate, also in line for a club debut against the Cowboys, trained in place of the injured skipper Alex Glenn.

The players are now enjoying a three-day break after officially kicking off their season at the club’s season launch.

Seibold revealed he was planning to hand Arthars his Broncos debut against the Cowboys.

“I’m a big believer in giving people opportunity when they deserve it,” Seibold said.

“I haven’t given anyone a debut who hasn’t deserved it. They’ve had to work hard for it during pre-season.

“Jesse will debut for our club but he’s earnt that opportunity through his work ethic. He took a leap of faith I suppose going from Titans to here.

“He sort of had to work his way into the team down there. Coming here, he knew that one particular area we were strong at was our outside back.

“He took a leap of faith but it goes to show hard work and belief gets his opportunity.”

Seibold has been big on blooding exciting, young talent out of the Brisbane system and the head coach is planning on continuing the trend in 2020. Players such as Tom Flegler, Patrick Carrigan, Xavier Coates and Tom Dearden made their NRL debuts under the 45-year-old in 2019.

Arthars, Hopoate and young fullback Tesi Niu have each been touted as being the next crop of NRL stars to be given a chance under Seibold.

“Our best performers (last year) were those young guys,” Seibold said.

“Payne (Haas) had 60 minutes of NRL prior to last year and I think I showed my hand starting him in the very first game he was available for.

“Giving guys like Tommy Flegler and Patty Carrigan their debuts last year and backing them, they’ve played over 20 games.”
