2020 NRL draw: Full home-and-away fixtures for every team

With the return of rugby league inching closer, see the ten NRL grudge matches you simply cannot afford to miss. SEE THE COMPLETE NRL DRAW HERE.

Coronavirus: What's next for our beloved sports?

From coaches at war to vile personal battles, the NRL returns on May 28 and there’s a score to settle or a grudge match to be fought and won at every turn. Here are the games you cannot miss!

Broncos v Eels – round three

There will be no late-night pokies sessions for the Brisbane Broncos this time around, the coronavirus has seen to that. After the humiliating 58-0 loss to the Eels in the first week of last year’s finals series, the Broncos will be ready for this one.

The Eels, who started this season as one of the premiership favourites, will be looking to consolidate on their first two wins.

With the eyes of sports-starved fans across the country watching, Parramatta are in the box set to send a clear message about their title ambitions.

Roosters v Rabbitohs – round three

Another chapter in the Book of Feuds will be written next Friday night and the storyline this time around is one of the most tantalising in recent years.

The fierce rivalry between the two sides has been dotted with player defections but very few have been as controversial as Latrell Mitchell’s switch from Bondi to Redfern. His positional battle with Roosters fullback James Tedesco will be a must-see.

Mitchell cited his desire to play in the No.1 jumper as the reason he jumped ship and Friday night’s blockbuster is a chance for the 22-year old to prove his detractors wrong after an underwhelming start in his new position.

Raiders v Roosters – round 10

Raiders fans waited 25 years to see their side in a grand final but instead of the premiership trophy they have been left with a recurring “six again” nightmare. The refereeing howler when the game was on the line has set up a juicy grand final rematch. And who can forget the heated verbal stoush between coaches Trent Robinson and Ricky Stuart over the stripping rule that culminated in an awkward and icy meeting between the two at the grand final launch.

Cronulla v Cowboys – round four

Valentine Holmes coped a verbal bashing from then-Cronulla captain Paul Gallen when he left the NRL in 2018 to chase a lucrative deal in the NFL. Gallen accused the star fullback of leaving the Sharks in the “lurch” and was critical of Holmes’ decision to return to rugby league with the North Queensland Cowboys rather than his former teammates in the Shire. Sharks halfback Chad Townsend said the first thing he would do when the draw was made is circle this clash in his calendar. While Townsend is a close friend of Holmes, the defection left a sour taste in the mouths of some in the Shire and will add spice to the encounter.

Eels v Cowboys – round eight

“Don’t you ever say that shit again or I will f...ing drop ya.” That was the threat Blues flyer Blake Ferguson fired at Queensland enforcer Josh McGuire during last year’s Origin decider. A “vile” sledge from Maguire left Ferguson incensed and led to a heated exchange between the two. It might have happened in the rep arena but there will be fireworks when they square-off for the first time since the incident.

McGuire and Ferguson clashed in the Origin decider last year.

Broncos v Rabbitohs - round 13

They don’t come as wily or as masterful as South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett and the mind games he played with Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold last year served as a warning — you don’t mess with the master. Bennett won the off-field mental battle and both games on the field. The coach swap turned bitter when Seibold did his best to unsettle Bennett, taking a dig at his assistant coach Jason Demetriou and the Rabbitohs’ attack. It didn’t work. With one of the best young rosters in the competition, Seibold is well placed to turn this season into a revenge mission against Bennett and his former club.

Warriors v Dragons – round three

Former New Zealand playmaker Shaun Johnson described the Warriors’ predicament as “drawing the short straw”. The Warriors have made the ultimate sacrifice to move away from their families and loved ones to help get the NRL back up and running. It’s won them the tag of “everyone’s second favourite team” but has the huge disruption to their normal routine ruined their campaign before it has even started? This is also a vital clash for the Dragons because their halfback Ben Hunt believes they must win their first two games or face missing the finals for another year.

Roosters v Knights – round 18

You don’t cross a powerhouse club like the Roosters or a rugby league supremo like Nick Politis. However, a brave Newcastle Knights did exactly that when they poached assistant coach Adam O’Brien right from under the Bondi club’s noses to take over from Nathan Brown. Apart from O’Brien, the Knights have a slew of former Roosters players in their line-up, including Mitchell Pearce, Connor Watson and Aiden Guerra.

Roosters v Dragons – rounds seven and 13

This year’s traditional Anzac Day clash between these two sides will be played on a Thursday night in round 13, which will also mark the anniversary of the battle of Lone Pine. Like every Anzac Day clash, it will the scene for an emotionally charged fixture. The round-seven game will feature another of the NRL’s father-son stories. Exiled Sharks coach Shane Flanagan, who is now an assistant at the Dragons, will take on son and Roosters halfback Kyle Flanagan for the first time.

Eels v Panthers – round five

This longstanding rivalry between two Western Sydney powerhouses doesn’t need us to talk it up. The players have done a pretty decent job themselves in recent years and have never shied away from expressing their disdain for each other. Panthers junior Reagan Campbell-Gillard grew up learning to hate Parramatta but finds himself in the blue and gold. He insists there is no bad blood between him and the Panthers and we won’t have to wait too long to find out how true that is.

Melbourne v Raiders – round three

Very few sides can lay claim to beating Craig Bellamy and his men twice in one season. But Canberra coach Ricky Stuart and his troops did that last season. The Raiders didn’t merely conquer the Storm, they beat them at their own game with two grinding performances that were underpinned by attributes the Storm have used to great success — defence and resilience.

Sea Eagles v Storm - round 16

What can be more rugby league than a rivalry forged by an all-in sideline brawl that has been dubbed The Battle of Brookvale. The Sea Eagles and Storm played in consecutive grand finals in 2007 and 2008 but it was the sideline showdown that confirmed the hatred between the two clubs is real.

LISTEN! Adam Mobbs, Phil Rothfield and Michael Carayannis are back with The Daily Telegraph NRL Podcast to discuss the revamped draw, South Sydney’s salary cap in the wake of Greg Inglis coming out of retirement, the fallout from Cody Walker’s street fight and Wayne Bennett’s hand in the cover-up, PLUS Paul Gallen, is this comeback for real?

The venues for all matches up until round nine have been confirmed, with the location of the remaining fixtures to be locked in at a later date.

The NRL has revealed the six venues it will use during the 2020 season.
