It’s no coincidence that Sydney Roosters rookie halfback Sam Walker already possesses composure like premiership-winning teammate Luke Keary.
Walker credits his starring start to his NRL career to daily sessions with Keary, who has turned coach while he is on the sidelines injured.
The star Roosters playmaker has been ruled out for the season with an ACL injury, so he is dedicating his time to the Tricolours’ rising No.7.
Walker can’t speak more highly of Keary, praising his tips for helping him become a more polished player on the big stage under pressure.
“Luke has been huge for me in the way that he has helped me develop into the halfback’s role,” Walker said.
“He will still come into the club and every day he will talk to me, give me a few pointers on how to run the team and check in how I’m going.
“I’ve idolised Luke for a long time, in terms of how he plays.”
Walker produced a masterclass performance against St George Illawarra on the weekend, scoring a try and setting up another to collect the prestigious Anzac Day medal.
The 18-year-old looks composed well beyond his years, but he believes he wouldn’t be able to execute without the support of the Roosters coaching staff.
“The club has been amazing for me,” he said.
“Robbo has given me simple roles, so for me I know what I need to do and just have to go out there on the field and execute my job.
“Having that basis has put me in good stead.”
Walker thoroughly enjoyed his maiden Anzac Day game experience – and now he wants more.
“Walking out in that atmosphere at such a special ground at the SCG, it literally gave me chills,” he said.
“You look around the crowd and see so many supporters there cheering us on such a special day in Anzac Day – it was amazing.
“It was a dream come true.”
