NRL SuperCoach teams analysis for final trials: Cheapie market turned on head

THE SuperCoach NRL cheapie market has been transformed following the team announcements for this weekend’s final trials.

Tom Sangster's top SuperCoach cheapies

THE SuperCoach NRL cheapie market has been turned on its head following the team announcements for this weekend’s final trials.

With many NRL coaches naming full strength sides, SuperCoaches finally have a genuine indication of the cheapies to target in 2018.

In the biggest developments for SuperCoach NRL — presented by hipages:

* The Wests Tigers have sent SuperCoaches back to the drawing board with the second most popular player in the game, Taane Milne, missing the 17. Fellow cheapie Mahe Fonua also misses out.

* At Penrith, Viliame Kikau is fast becoming a round one must-have after being named to start on the left edge. James Fisher-Harris and Sam McKendry are also cheapie options after scoring bench spots, while Christian Crichton remains in the running for the right wing spot of Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (ankle), who is racing the clock for round one.

* South Sydney props Mark Nicholls and Junior Tatola are genuine chances for round one after scoring spots in the 17 for the Charity Shield, while Richard Kennar appears to have won the right wing spot.

* Brisbane’s Todd Murphy has come into the cheapie frame following news Andrew McCullough (ACL) may miss round one, while bargain buys Jamayne Isaako and Jonus Pearson continue to battle it out for a wing spot.

Viliame Kikau, Bryce Cartwright and Lachlan Croker are all on the cheapie radar.
Viliame Kikau, Bryce Cartwright and Lachlan Croker are all on the cheapie radar.

* Manly’s Jack Gosiewski and Kelepi Tanginoa have surged into cheapie contention after scoring spots in the 17, but backs Brad Parker and Tom Wright have bowed out.

* Phillip Sami remains in the cheapie frame after retaining a wing spot at the Titans, despite Michael Gordon and Konrad Hurrell coming into the backline. Bargain buys Will Matthews and Keegan Hipgrave have also scored spots in the 17, but will likely lose them to Kevin Proctor (throat) and Jai Arrow (ribs) respectively for round one.

* Zac Lomax and Luciano Leilua remain in the cheapie frame after being named in the Dragons’ Charity Shield team.

* Sam Kasiano, the 40th most popular player in SuperCoach, again misses out for Melbourne due to an ankle injury.

* Former Storm player Slade Griffin has become a cheapie option at hooker or back row after scoring the Newcastle No. 9 jersey.

* Early-season cheapie prospect Nat Butcher has snuck into the Roosters 17 but will likely drop out for Boyd Cordner in round one.

* Gold Coast’s Bryce Cartwright and Leilani Latu, Canberra’s Siliva Havilii, Brisbane’s Matt Lodge, Cronulla’s Sione Katoa, Manly’s Lachlan Croker and New Zealand’s Peta Hiku can be safely locked in a cheapies after all but confirming round one spots.

* Parramatta’s Greg Leleisiuao and Canberra’s Craig Garvey have bowed out of cheapie contention.

* Katoa named on the wing in a full strength Sharks’ backline while Cronulla opt to rest Paul Gallen though the club has confirmed the skipper will be available for Round One.

STORM v COWBOYS

8pm AEDT (7pm local) Friday at Suncorp Stadium

STORM: 1. Jahrome Hughes 2. Young Tonumaipea 3. William Chambers 4. Curtis Scott 5. Josh Addo-Carr 6. Cameron Munster 7. Brodie Croft 8. Jesse Bromwich 9. Cameron Smith 10. Tim Glasby 11. Felise Kaufusi 12 Ryan Hoffman 13 Dale Finucane. Interchange: 14. Nelson Asofa-Solomona 15. Christian Welch 16. Kenny Bromwich 17. Brandon Smith 18. Scott Drinkwater 19. Justin Olam 20. Joe Stimson 21. Tui Kamikamica 22. Patrick Kaufusi 23. Ryan Papenhuyzen 24. Billy Walters 25. Ryley Jacks 26. Louis Geraghty 27. Matt Soper-Lawler

Team news: Billy Slater (shoulder) will be rested as a precaution in Cameron Smith’s testimonial. Suliasi Vunivalu also misses out after pulling up sore from the World Club Challenge. Both players are expected to be right for round one. Jahrome Hughes replaces Slater at fullback. Young Tonumaipea replaces Vunivalu on the right wing.

SuperCoach news: Sam Kasiano, the 40th most popular player in SuperCoach, again misses out due to an ankle injury. Even in a rusty performance last week Cameron Smith still scored 80 SuperCoach points, proving he’s impossible to leave out for round one. Jesse Bromwich has already surged from 18th to 15th in the rankings following his World Club Challenge barnstormer, and he could push into the top 10 with another strong display on Friday night.

POD hunters should keep half an eye on Melbourne’s outside backs — and even Brodie Croft — because the Storm have an easy start against the Bulldogs, Tigers, Cowboys, Sharks and Tigers.

COWBOYS: 1. Lachlan Coote 2. Kyle Feldt 3. Justin O’Neill 4. Kane Linnett 5. Antonio Winterstein 6. Michael Morgan 7. Johnathan Thurston (c) 8. Matthew Scott (c) 9. Jake Granville 10. Jordan McLean 11. Gavin Cooper 12. Ethan Lowe 13. Jason Taumalolo. Interchange: 14. Ben Hampton 15. Coen Hess 16. Scott Bolton 17. John Asiata 18. Corey Jensen 19. Te Maire Martin

Team news: Coach Paul Green has named his big guns. Star recruit Jordan McLean plays his first game for the Cowboys, while the likes of Michael Morgan, Jason Taumalolo and Gavin Cooper have been named after sitting out last week.

SuperCoach news: Johnathan Thurston will look to bounce back in his testimonial match following a rusty return from injury last week. He has dropped 10 per cent in ownership since SuperCoach launch. The Cowboys have named a full-strength forward pack so keep an eye on the minutes of regression candidate Jason Taumalolo, whose game time was inflated last year.

PNG HUNTERS v BRONCOS

4pm AEDT (3pm local) Saturday at Port Moresby

BRONCOS: 1. Jamayne Isaako 2. Jonus Pearson 3. James Roberts 4. Tom Opacic 5. Jordan Kahu 6. Sam Scarlett 7. Kodi Nikorima 8. Matthew Lodge 9. Todd Murphy 10. Sam Thaiday 11. Alex Glenn 12. Matt Gillett 13. Josh McGuire 14. Anthony Milford 15. Joe Ofahengaue 16. Korbin Sims 17. Tevita Pangai 18. Jake Turpin 19. Corey Oates 20. Jaydn Su’a

Team news: Anthony Milford gets his first game time of the year following shoulder surgery. Sam Scarlett will start in the halves alongside Kodi Nikorima, with Milford to come off the bench. World Cup star Josh McGuire will also play his first game of the year, named to start at lock. Darius Boyd (hamstring), Andrew McCullough (ACL) and Jack Bird (shoulder) remain sidelined.

SuperCoach news: Anthony Milford currently sits in under eight per cent of teams but will surge through the rankings if he carves up the Hunters. A word of warning though, four of his first six matches are away from Suncorp Stadium. He has averaged 77 at Suncorp over his career, but just 52 away last year. However, countering that is the fact he plays the Tigers, Titans, Knights and Warriors in the opening six rounds.

Barring injury, Matthew Lodge is locked in as a round one cheapie following a brilliant performance in last week’s trial. The only decision now is whether to play him in your 17. Corey Oates’ strong showing in the back row last week should ensure a round one wing spot for cheapie Jamayne Isaako, but Jonus Pearson also remains a contender. Andrew McCullough (ACL) is in doubt for round one, opening the door for potential cheapie Todd Murphy.

Brisbane’s Todd Murphy is a chance for round one.
Brisbane’s Todd Murphy is a chance for round one.

TITANS v WARRIORS

6pm AEDT (5pm local) at Sunshine Coast Stadium

TITANS: 1. Michael Gordon 2. Brendan Elliott 3. Konrad Hurrell 4. Dale Copley 5. Philip Sami 6. Kane Elgey 7. Ashley Taylor 8. Leilani Latu 9. Nathan Peats 10. Max King 11. Ryan James 12. Will Matthews 13. Bryce Cartwright. Interchange: 14. Mitch Rein 15. Keegan Hipgrave 16. Jai Whitbread 17. Joe Greenwood 18. Moeaki Fotuaika 19. Alexander Brimson 20. Karl Lawton 21. Tyronne Roberts-Davis 22. Kiah Cooper 23. Tony Matautia.

Team news: All fit players have been named with Michael Gordon, Will Matthews and Mitch Rein to play their first games for the club and Konrad Hurrell, Ash Taylor, Nathan Peats and Ryan James also named. Unavailable Titans include Jai Arrow (ribs), Anthony Don (shoulder), Morgan Boyle (shoulder), Ryan Simpkins (knee), Jack Stockwell (shoulder), Brenko Lee (knee), Kevin Proctor (throat) and Jarrod Wallace (suspension).

SuperCoach news: Borderline cheapie Phillip Sami retains a wing spot despite Michael Gordon and Konrad Hurrell coming into the backline. Sami is one to keep an eye on with Anthony Don (shoulder) still on the sideline and racing the clock for round one. Popular cheapies Bryce Cartwright and Leilani Latu retain spots in the starting pack, but SuperCoaches will hope for more impact after both were quiet last week as the Titans were hammered by the Broncos.

Will Matthews may yet emerge as a cheapie (with added dual flexibility) after being named to start on the right edge, although he’ll likely move to the bench for round one to accommodate Kevin Proctor (throat). Likewise, bottom dollar prop Keegan Hipgrave has scored the No. 17 jumper but will likely lose it to Jai Arrow (ribs) in round one.

Phillip Sami remains in contention for round one. Picture: Adam Head

WARRIORS: 1. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck (c) 2. David Fusitu’a 18. Peta Hiku 4. Solomone Kata 20. Ken Maumalo 6. Blake Green 7. Shaun Johnson 21. Adam Blair 9. Cam Cook 10. James Gavet 11. Tohu Harris 12. Leivaha Pulu 13. Bunty Afoa. Interchange: 14. Ligi Sao 15. Chris Satae 16. Sam Lisone 17. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 22. Simon Mannering 23. Joseph Vuna 25. Anthony Gelling 28. Hayze Perham 30. Ata Hingano 31. Issac Luke

Team news: New halves pairing Shaun Johnson and recruit Blake Green will combine for the first time, while Adam Blair and Tohu Harris make their club debuts. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Simon Mannering, Issac Luke and Sam Lisone have also been added to the squad after missing the Melbourne trial.

SuperCoach news: Borderline cheapie Peta Hiku was strong in last week’s trial and should improve again this week with Shaun Johnson in the side and feeding Hiku the ball at right centre. Simon Mannering has been named out of the 17 and will likely get minimal game time, which hopefully increases his POD-ness. He’s currently under 12 per cent ownership.

Shaun Johnson is back for the Warriors.

SEA EAGLES v ROOSTERS

6.30pm AEDT Saturday at Central Coast Stadium

SEA EAGLES: 1. Tom Trbojevic 2. Akuila Uate 3. Matthew Wright 4. Brian Kelly 5. Jorge Taufua 6. Lachlan Croker 7. Daly Cherry-Evans 8. Addin Fonua-Blake 9. Apisai Koroisau 10. Martin Taupau 11. Curtis Sironen 12. Joel Thompson 13. Jake Trbojevic. Interchange: 14. Shaun Lane 15. Jack Gosiewski 16. Frank Winterstein 17. Kelepi Tanginoa 19. Manase Fainu

Team news: Coach Trent Barrett has named his strongest possible team with the likes of Tom Trbojevic, Jake Trbojevic, Daly Cherry-Evans, Martin Taupau, Apisai Koroisau and Akuila Uate all included. DCE and young gun Lachlan Croker form a new-look halves combination, while recruit Joel Thompson makes his club debut. Jorge Taufua (ACL) returns after a long lay-off.

SuperCoach news: All eyes will be on Lachlan Croker, the fourth most popular player in SuperCoach, as he makes his top level debut for the Sea Eagles. The Twin Turbos get their first game time of the year and SuperCoaches will look on keenly as the Sea Eagles have one of the best opening draws of any side — Knights, Eels, Rabbitohs, Raiders and Titans.

The return of Jorge Taufua (ACL) on the left wing effectively ends the cheapie hopes of Brad Parker, while Matthew Wright’s switch to right centre has halted the cheapie hopes of Tom Wright. However, bench forwards Jack Gosiewski and Kelepi Tanginoa now have cheapie claims after earning spots in the 17.

ROOSTERS: 1. James Tedesco 2. Daniel Tupou 3. Latrell Mitchell 4. Joseph Manu 5. Blake Ferguson 6. Mitch Cornish 7. Cooper Cronk 8. Siosiua Taukeiaho 9. Jake Friend (c) 10. Dylan Napa 11. Ryan Matterson 12. Mitchell Aubusson 13. Isaac Liu. Interchange: 14. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves 15. Zane Tetevano 16. Victor Radley 17. Nat Butcher 18. Reece Robinson 19. Sean O’Sullivan

Team news: Star signings James Tedesco and Cooper Cronk make their club debuts. Boyd Cordner and Luke Keary (jaw) are the only players missing from coach Trent Robinson’s best 17.

SuperCoach news: Siosiua Taukeiaho has been named to start at prop ahead of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and if that continues in round one the man we call TKO is a near-must, especially with the goalkicking duties. SuperCoaches get their first look at the Cooper Cronk, James Tedesco combination — and clearly SuperCoaches are expecting big things with Tedesco the seventh most popular player in the game. Early-season cheapie prospect Nat Butcher has snuck into the 17 but will likely drop out for Boyd Cordner in round one.

Tom Sangster picks his 'Top Guns' for SuperCoach 2018

PANTHERS v BULLDOGS

6.30pm AEDT Saturday at Belmore Oval

PANTHERS: 1. Dylan Edwards 2. Josh Mansour 3. Dean Whare 4. Tyrone Peachey 5. Christian Crichton 6. James Maloney 7. Nathan Cleary 8. James Tamou 9. Peter Wallace (c) 10. Reagan Campbell-Gillard 11. Isaah Yeo 12. Viliame Kikau 13. Trent Merrin. Interchange: 14. Sione Katoa 15. Sam McKendry 16. Tim Browne 17. James Fisher-Harris 18. Jarome Luai 19. Moses Leota 20. Waqa Blake 21. Corey Harawira-Naera

Team news: The Panthers have picked a full-strength squad with Peter Wallace, Josh Mansour and Reagan Campbell-Gillard added to the team that beat the Roosters last weekend. Waqa Blake and Corey Harawira-Naera will play their first minutes as they return from shoulder reconstructions, both named on an extended bench. Youngster Christian Crichton scores the right wing spot in the absence of Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (ankle). Viliame Kikau earns a starting back row spot.

SuperCoach news: Cheapie option Viliame Kikau is fast emerging as a round one must-have after being named to start on the left edge. Isaah Yeo switches to the right while Corey Harawira-Naera, who made the right fringe spot his own last year, has been named on an extended bench as he returns from a shoulder reconstruction.

Cheapie prospect Christian Crichton remains on the right wing as he guns for the spot of Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (ankle), who is racing the clock for round one. Nathan Cleary kicked goals ahead of James Maloney in last week’s trial and he is therefore a POD option at under 10 per cent ownership. Put a line through Josh Mansour as a buy. With Tyrone Peachey again named at left centre, Mansour’s impact will effectively be limited to kick returns and hit-ups.

Also keep an eye on forwards Sam McKendry and James Fisher-Harris, who are cheapie prospects following Bryce Cartwright’s exit. Trent Merrin is looking as fit as ever and is therefore a bounce back candidate.

BULLDOGS: 1. Kerrod Holland 2. Josh Bergamin 3. Lachlan Lewis 4. John Olive 5. Tom Carr 6. Josh Cleeland 7. Jeremy Marshall-King 8. Francis Tualau 9. Fa’amanu Brown 10. Renouf To’omaga 11. Jayden Okunbor 12. Rhyse Martin 13. Greg Eastwood. Reserves: Ofahiki Ogden, Asipeli Fine, Lachlan Burr, Jack Nelson, Jarred Anderson, Bronson Garlick, Joel Luani, D’Rhys Miller

Team news: This is a virtual reserve grade side with Greg Eastwood the sole big name included.

SuperCoach news: The fact Fa’amanu Brown has been named at hooker in what is essentially a reserve grade side is a good sign for Michael Lichaa, who now appears set for 80 minutes. Lichaa was best on ground in last week’s trial, scoring a try, setting up another and running the ball freely.

SHARKS v WESTS TIGERS

7pm AEDT Saturday at Campbelltown Stadium

SHARKS: 1 Valentine Holmes 2 Sosaia Feki 3 Josh Dugan 4 Ricky Leutele 5 Sione Katoa 6 Matt Moylan 7 Chad Townsend 8 Andrew Fifita 9 Jayden Brailey 10 Matt Prior

11 Luke Lewis 12 Wade Graham 13 Jayson Bukuya. Interchange: 14 James Segeyaro 15 Trent Hodkinson 16 Ava Seumanufagai 17 Braden Uele 18 Kurt Dillion 19 Kurt Capewell 20 Joseph Paulo 21 Edrick Lee 22 Billy Magoulias 23 Aaron Gray

Team news: The Sharks have named a full strength side for the trial against the Tigers with one notable, very notable, omission in Paul Gallen. Cronulla have declared that their skipper will be available for round one. Sione Katoa retained his position on the wing ahead of Edrick Lee and Aaron Gray.

SuperCoach news: Katoa being named in the full strength line-up is a boon for SuperCoaches and barring a diastorous turnout or injury he should be locked in for the start of the season. Speaking of which that’s when we will have our first chance to see Paul Gallen in action but I’m comfortable picking him in my team after all aged 62 (not really) he hardly needs another pre-season in his ageing legs.

TIGERS: 1. Corey Thompson 2. David Nofoaluma 3. Kevin Naiqama 4. Esan Marsters 5. Malakai Watene-Zalezniak 6. Josh Reynolds 7. Luke Brooks 8. Russell Packer 9. Matt McIlwrick 10. Ben Matulino 11. Robbie Rochow 12. Chris Lawrence 13. Matt Eisenhuth. Interchange: 14. Pita Godinet 15. Josh Aloiai 16. Tim Grant 17. Michael Chee Kam 18. Taane Milne 19. JJ Felise 20. Mahe Fonua 21. Chris McQueen 22. Tyson Gamble

Team news: Russell Packer and Ben Matulino make their Wests Tigers debuts. Benji Marshall, Sauaso Sue, Elijah Taylor and Alex Twal are the only NRL squad members not named. In huge SuperCoach news, cheapie Taane Milne has missed the 17. Tui Lolohea and Mahe Fonua have been named in reserve grade.

SuperCoach news: It’s back to the drawing board for SuperCoaches, with cheapies Taane Milne and Mahe Fonua both named out of the 17. Fonua has also been named for the reserve grade trial alongside Tuimoala Lolohea.

KNIGHTS v EELS

7pm AEDT at Maitland No. 1 Showground

KNIGHTS: 1. Kalyn Ponga 2. Shaun Kenny-Dowall 3. Sione Mata’utia 4. Tautau Moga 5. Nathan Ross 6. Connor Watson 7. Mitchell Pearce 8. Daniel Saifiti 9. Slade Griffin 10. Jacob Lillyman 11. Lachlan Fitzgibbon 12. Aidan Guerra 13. Herman Ese’ese. Interchange: 14. Danny Levi 15. Chris Heighington 16. Jamie Buhrer 17. Jacob Saifiti

Team news: The Knights trot out their new-look spine of Kalyn Ponga at fullback, Connor Watson and Mitchell Pearce in the halves, and Slade Griffin at hooker. Tautau Moga and Daniel Saifiti both play their first match of the year following off-season shoulder surgery, however Mitch Barnett (also shoulder) will miss the match as a precaution.

SuperCoach news: The news is good for Connor Watson, the sixth most popular player in SuperCoach. He is all but assured 80 minutes in round one after coach Nathan Brown opted for a two-hooker rotation, meaning Watson’s minutes won’t be stolen by a bench utility such as Brock Lamb.

Former Storm hooker Slade Griffin looms as an intriguing borderline cheapie after scoring the starting role, so keep an eye on Brown’s rotations. Popular mid-ranger Herman Ese’ese has seemingly scored a win by being named starting lock, although it’s unclear if this will continue in round one given last year’s regular No. 13 Mitch Barnett (shoulder) is due back.

EELS: 1. Bevan French 2. Kirisome Auva’a 3. Michael Jennings 4. Jarryd Hayne 5. Josh Hoffman 6. Corey Norman 7. Mitchell Moses 8. Daniel Alvaro 9. Cameron King 10. Tim Mannah (C) 11. Manu Ma’u 12. Brad Takairangi 13. Nathan Brown. Interchange: 14. Beau Scott 15. Kenny Edwards 16. Kane Evans 17. Suaia Matagi 18. Tepai Moeroa 19. Peni Terepo 20. Will Smith 21. Kaysa Pritchard 22. David Gower.

Team news: Jarryd Hayne will make his blue and gold return in the centres while Brad Takairangi switches to second row. Cameron King starts at hooker ahead of Kaysa Pritchard.

SuperCoach news: Brad Takairangi scores a starting back row spot and is therefore serious mid-range choice at a tick over $300K, with the added bonus of dual 2RF/CTW availability. SuperCoaches get their first look at Mitchell Moses since his starring role in the World Cup for Lebanon. He has surged through the rankings in recent weeks and now sits in almost 20 per cent of teams. Greg Leleisiuao has bowed out of cheapie contention with Josh Hoffman preferred on the wing.

PPM monster Daniel Alvaro scores a starting prop spot and is a genuine mid-range purchase if he ups his game time from 37 minutes to over 50 minutes. At 11 per cent ownership, Sangster’s Paradise won’t be the only team keeping a close eye on Jarryd Hayne in his first game back for the Eels.

RABBITOHS v DRAGONS

at Glen Willow Sporting Complex, Mudgee (7.30pm local)

RABBITOHS: 1. Alex Johnston 2. Richard Kennar 3. Hymel Hunt 4. Dane Gagai 5. Robert Jennings 6. Cody Walker 7. Adam Doueihi 8. Thomas Burgess 9. Damien Cook 10. Mark Nicholls 11. John Sutton 12. Tyrell Fuimaono 13. Sam Burgess. Interchange: 14. Robbie Farah 15. Jason Clark 16. George Burgess 17. Junior Tatola 18. Dean Britt 19. Braidon Burns 20. Jacob Gagan 21. Zane Musgrove

Team news: Star recruit Dane Gagai makes his club debut at right centre. Sam Burgess, John Sutton, Cody Walker and Braidon Burns have also been added to last week’s squad. Adam Reynolds (foot), Greg Inglis (ACL) and Angus Crichton (Achilles) remain sidelined.

SuperCoach news: Former Storm prop Mark Nicholls has come from nowhere to become a genuine cheapie option for round one. He stood out in the first trial, running for 169m in 17 runs, with both stats the most of any South Sydney forward. Nicholls retains a starting position for the Charity Shield and appears almost certain of a spot in the 17 for round one, with Cameron Murray (quad) and Angus Crichton (Achilles) the only forwards to come into the side, neither of whom are props.

Also keep an eye on young prop Junior Tatola, who made 127 metres in just 11 runs last week. Cheapie option Richard Kennar appears to have locked in the right wing spot for round one. Sam Burgess will play lock in place of the injured Murray.

DRAGONS: Leeson Ah Mau, Euan Aitken, Jack De Belin, Matt Dufty, Tyson Frizell, James Graham, Ben Hunt, Josh Kerr, Tim Lafai, Jeremy Latimore, Blake Lawrie, Luciano Leilua, Zac Lomax, Nene Macdonald, Kurt Mann, Cameron McInnes, Darren Nicholls, Jason Nightingale, Reece Robson, Hame Sele, Tariq Sims, Paul Vaughan, Gareth Widdop

Team news: Key forwards Jack de Belin and Tyson Frizell have been named for their first games of the year after resting up last week.

SuperCoach news: SuperCoach order has been restored. Youngster Reuben Garrick started ahead of the heavily-fancied Zac Lomax last week, but Garrick misses out altogether this week, meaning Lomax remains the cheapie to target in the Dragons backline. Popular bargain Luciano Leilua made 38 tackles last week, but the true test of game time comes this week with Jack De Belin and Tyson Frizell back in the team.
