NRL SuperCoach Champion’s Choice: Ryan Matterson

HE’S coming off a brilliant 85, is predicted to rise by almost $50,000 next week and, perhaps most importantly, is dual position.

EACH week I will focus on players to add to our Watch List, which is available in the My Team Tracker on the SuperCoach — presented by hipages — homepage.

It really is a great tool that can help you keep track of players who may come under consideration at some stage this season.

Round two has come and gone and my first thought is I’m glad I’m not writing a Captain’s choice article. With Tedesco in round one and Smith in round two, I’m thinking I’ve become a SuperCoach jinx.

In this weeks Champion’s Choice article I’m going to focus on a player who has gotten off to a flyer in 2018 and that player is Greenacre born Ryan Matterson from the Sydney Roosters.

Ryan is the nephew of Terry Matterson who played 163 games of first grade for the Brisbane Broncos and Sydney Roosters. He played his junior football at the Bankstown Bulls and also the Wentworthville Magpies.

Ryan was a Parramatta Eels junior who played 24 games for the Eels in the NYC competition from 2012 to 2014. In 2014 Matterson played 16 games for the Eels NYC team and managed to score 17 tries.

WEEKEND WRAP: 10 things we learned

Ryan Matterson has started the season on fire.
Ryan Matterson has started the season on fire.

He was selected as part of the Junior Kangaroo team that featured future NRL regulars Clint Gutherson, Valentine Holmes, Jack Bird, Euan Aitken, Cameron McInnes, Tevita Pangai, Cameron Munster and Kelepi Tanginoa.

The Junior Kangaroo team went down to the junior Kiwis 15-14. Matterson also won selection in the NSW Under 20s State of Origin team that beat Queensland 30-8.

In 2015 Matterson graduated to Parramatta’s NSW Cup team Wentworthville Magpies and he was picked up by the Roosters on a two year deal from 2016.

In 2016 Ryan made his NRL debut in round eight where he played five-eighth versus St George Illawarra Dragons and he scored a try on debut.

He was selected for the NSW City rep team against Country after playing just the two NRL games. Matterson scored a second half try in City’s 44-30 win.

SuperCoach-wise in 2016 Matterson played 15 games where he scored a total of 621 points. He played an average of 61 minutes per game and had a PPM of 0.74. His highest score for the season was 78 points on debut against the St George Illawarra Dragons in 74 minutes of game time.

He had a season low score of three points in 26 minutes of game time versus the Brisbane Broncos in Round 21. Matterson showed great versatility with five games at five-eighth, one at half, one at 2RF and the remaining eight from the bench.

In 2017, Matterson played 21 regular season matches, again showing great versatility playing three at centre, nine at 2RF and the remaining nine from the bench.

SuperCoach-wise he had a total of 998 points with a 48 point game average achieved in 61 minutes of game time at a PPM of 0.78.

His season highest score of 80 points came against the Sharks in an 80 minute second row performance in round 17. He had a season low of 28 points vs the Newcastle Knights in round 7 where he played 36 minutes from the bench.

In round one 2018, Matterson was a late inclusion from the bench to the starting team where he played 58 minutes and scored 57 points.

In round two, he was again a late addition to the starting team where he managed a try and finished up with a SuperCoach total of 85 points.

Matterson is one I’m considering as a trade in target this week and moving forward, wouldn’t look out of place as a centre in anyone’s starting 17.

He’s a nice option for owners with an under-performing centre/2RF or to replace an injured player such as Daniel Tupou or BJ Leilua.

If you are not looking at trading in Matterson this week, make sure to add him to your Watch List.
