Rather than getting guns, cheapies and PODs, you’ll want to just draft the best possible team, and not worry about a salary cap or making money. Someone you would not have even considered in your Classic team may just be a priority target in Draft.
Your first few picks in draft are imperative to laying the foundation for the rest of your season, so you don’t want to waste them on someone who is overhyped or a player you could have drafted later. So let’s take a look at the best draft players at every position!
HOOKER
We’ll be starting off with the spine positions in these rankings, because in SuperCoach draft they are arguably the most important positions, given the lack of quality options at some positions. And hooker in 2020 is probably the skinniest position of the lot, with realistically only four or five reliable 80 minute hookers, with massive huge gap between the top options and the rest.
While everyone can get Damien Cook or Cameron Smith in Classic, only two people can get grab them in Draft and so we can expect these guys to go very early in the draft.
1.Damien Cook 2.Cameron Smith 3.Josh Hodgson 4.Reed Mahoney 5.Apisai Koroisau 6.Victor Radley 7.Cameron McInnes* 8.Jazz Tevaga* 9.Jake Friend 10.Connor Watson
* Cameron McInnes and Jazz Tevaga will miss the start of the NRL season and are risky, costing you a lot in draft capital, but they are still some of the better options at hooker when fit.
HALFBACK
Next up we have halfback, which again has very few premium options, with a huge gap after the top options. You’ve got to remember that when a player is drafted, you can’t have them, so if you leave the halfback pick too late you could be stuck with someone like Michael Morgan.
1.Nathan Cleary 2.Shaun Johnson 3.Mitch Moses 4.Daly Cherry-Evans 5.Adam Reynolds 6.Ben Hunt 7.Luke Brooks 8.Jahrome Hughes 9.Michael Morgan 10.Kyle Flanagan
FIVE-EIGHTH
Starting to sound like a broken record here, but five-eighth is one of the thinnest positions for SuperCoach Draft, and is even thinner than halfback for quality players in 2020. What’s more is that the top options will likely all be gone in the first two or three rounds, so you’ll wanna grab someone good early on if possible. The later options are so bad that I’m forced to include Matt Moylan in my rankings as much as it pains me.
1.Cameron Munster, 2.Shaun Johnson, 3.Cody Walker, 4.Luke Keary, 5.Anthony Milford, 6.Jack Wighton, 7.Michael Morgan, 8.Corey Norman, 9.Alexander Brimson, 10.Kyle Flanagan
FULLBACK
While fullback is normally pretty thin, 2020 is actually looking like an improvement for depth, with the return of Val Holmes and the emergence of Ryan Papenhuzen. While the top options will still go in the first round of basically every draft, it looks like you can maybe wait a bit longer on fullback than in years gone by.
1.James Tedesco, 2.Tom Trbojevic, 3.Kalyn Ponga, 4.Roger Tuivasa-Scheck, 5.Ryan Papenhuyzen, 6.Valentine Holmes, 7.Latrell Mitchell, 8.Clint Gutherson, 9.Charnze Nicholl-Klokstad, 10.Anthony Milford
FRONT ROW FORWARD
Okay finally we move on from the low-depth positions to the ones with plenty of options. While the depth at these positions is much greater, still don’t forget to sleep on these as the top options will still go very early, and you need a gun forward to help solidify your team’s base points each week. You can have the best spine in draft but without a gun forward you’ll still find it hard to win some games.
1.Payne Haas, 2.David Klemmer, 3.Josh Papalii, 4. Martin Taupau, 5.James Fisher-Harris, 6.Addin Fonua-Blake*, 7.Andrew Fifita, 8.Aidan Tolman, 9.Paul Vaughan, 10.Tevita Pangai, 11.James Tamou, 12.Junior Paulo, 13.Sio Siua Taukeiaho, 14.Jared Waerea Hargreaves, 15.Jarrod Wallace, 16.Alex Twal, 17.Jordan McLean, 18.Josh McGuire, 19.Aaron Woods, 20.Nelson Asofa-Solomona
SECOND ROW FORWARD
With most draft formats requiring you to have three starting backrowers in your team, this is definitely a position you can somewhat be patient on, with many serviceable mid-range options. But the gun backrowers are some of the best players in SuperCoach at ANY position, so if you can stack a gun 2RF with some midrangers, your team should be fairly well balanced.
1.Jason Taumalolo, 2.Ryan Matterson, 3.John Bateman*, 4.Cameron Murray, 5.Jake Trbojevic*, 6.James Fisher-Harris, 7.Jai Arrow, 8.David Fifita, 9.Nathan Brown, 10.Viliame Kikau, 11.Kenny Bromwich, 12.Mitch Barnett, 13.Tevita Pangai, 14. Briton Nikora, 15.Tohu Harris,16.Cameron McInnes*, 17.Dale Finucane, 18.Jazz Tevaga*, 19.Angus Crichton, 20.Corey Harawira-Naera
CENTRE/WING
Oh boy, now we hit the outside backs which is by far the hardest position to rank, given just how many players there are. Given the inconsistency of the CTW position, I would not recommend taking one at all in the first three rounds of the draft if your are in a 4x CTW league. But if you want a gun CTW then you may just have to use an early pick to get someone like Latrell Mitchell. But like 2RF, there are some great mid-range options who you can wait a bit on, just don’t wait too long, or you could end up with a pretty mediocre backline.
1.Latrell Mitchell, 2.Ken Maumalo, 3.Maika Sivo, 4.Will Hopoate, 5.David Nofoaluma, 6.Jarrod Croker, 7.Blake Fergusson, 8.Bronson Xerri, 9.Rebuen Garrick, 10.Jamayne Isaako, 11.Daniel Tupou, 12.Esan Marsters, 13.Braidon Burns, 14.Brian To’o, 15.Josh Addo-Carr, 16.Paul Momirovski, 17.Brett Morris, 18.Brian Kelly, 19.Issah Yeo, 20.Kotoni Staggs, 21.Jayden Okunbor, 22.Brent Naden, 23.Euan Aitken, 24.Joseph Manu, 25.Joseph Leilua, 26.Josh Mansour, 27.James Roberts, 28.Jesse Ramien, 29.Corey Oates, 30.Waqa Blake, 31.Kyle Feldt, 32.Jack Bird, 33.Kurt Capewell, 34.Zac Lomax, 33.Adam Doueihi 34.Campbell Graham, 35.Peta Hiku, 36.Moses Mbye, 37.Dane Gagai, 38.Jordan Pereira, 39.Justin Olam, 40.Phillip Sami
Good luck with your drafts in 2020 SuperCoaches. Remember not to do them too early, but also don’t leave it too late! Sometime after trials, but before the season launch would be ideal.
