Phil Gould has slammed SuperCoach — and fantasy sports in general — in a series of Tweets.
The Penrith Panthers supremo took to social media on Friday and Saturday to criticise News Corp’s NRL SuperCoach competition.
While Gould has “no problem” with SuperCoach and SuperCoach participants, he says he would “never” allow one of his players to be interviewed about SuperCoach.
He also blamed the game and associated technologies for lowering the skills of Australia’s younger generation.
“All I see over the past 10 years is technology, smartphones, social media platforms, gaming entertainment, excessive porn availability, building a generation of kids with no skills or tools to deal with real life,” Gould said.
Gould also said gambling “brings far more people and money to the sport than fantasy sports”.

Itâs not an odd response. Itâs an honest response. I have no problem with Fantasy sports. People obviously enjoy it. However they exist outside of what we do do. We can promote it. But we donât answer to it. https://t.co/tyrWpK8IuI

Thatâs great. The game embraces fantasy sports. Enjoy it for what it is. Gambling brings far more people and money to the sport than fantasy sports. Players are not permitted to talk to gamblers. They donât promote gambling. Yet gambling turnover grows significantly every year. https://t.co/NYEQxKYPLx

I beg your pardon. My response is not rubbish. Itâs actually very accurate. You obviously have an opinion about gambling on sports. Good on you. Many will agree. However, turnover grows every year and it appears a lot of people do it, despite your dislike of gambling. https://t.co/Up43iZ5E1o

Indeed it is. But that bird has flown. Social media is a cesspool. But thatâs not going to change. Mobile phones and technology are ruining kids lives and communication skills. Too late though. Indoor gaming on technology is ruining kids health and well being. Solve that please. https://t.co/PorTRPiGaN

???? How does SuperCoach get kids into the parks? We never had SuperCoach when we were growing up. We were in the parks all the time. Summer and winter. https://t.co/HDITww4lnF

I think thatâs a made up argument based on wishful thinking without any facts to support it. I know you enjoy your SuperCoach. Iâm happy for you. I have no problem with fantasy sports. But I donât see you interviewing players about it. Enjoy the season ahead. https://t.co/u3gVzg9eW4

I never said it did. Iâm not beating my chest. I answered a question. But thanks for playing. https://t.co/voT1XtoFRv

Your 2 and 4 year old are playing SuperCoach? https://t.co/j5QcEiagDg

Itâs not short sighted. Itâs experienced. All I see over the past 10 years is technology, smartphones, social media platforms, gaming entertainment, excessive porn availability, building a generation of kids with no skills or tools to deal with real life. I make no apology. https://t.co/VQWF6gPe5P

These guys, with their anonymous SuperCoach accounts, are up until 2am, trying to justify and promote their world to me. Itâs an example of what Iâm saying. Nice kids. Obviously very passionate about Fantasy. Iâm not. As for fantasy sports attracting kids to the sport? Thatâs BS. https://t.co/gnt0kxQmZe

Yeah, itâs done wonders for America. A society thatâs become a role model for the rest of the world. Letâs follow what they do. https://t.co/nQ2W8I0Uma

You have to read where this conversation started. Iâve no problem with Fantasy sports. Or people who play it. Good on them. The conversation started because a SuperCoach player asked if I would let him interview NRL players about his fantasy football. I said no. With good reason https://t.co/1LKncs9vfn

Exactly. Coaches will tell you that some NRL players are wrongly influenced by what points or stats they score on Fantasy sport. The things that SuperCoach values are quite often NOT the measure of a playerâs job or his contribution to the team. The worlds are different. https://t.co/BP1vKTvZTp

Go back and read the whole conversation instead of coming in at the back end. Youâve missed the point. https://t.co/0bGZgAmZr0
