KFC SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 9

SuperCoaches will be flat out fielding a team this week with 13 popular players facing reduced roles or complete wipeouts.

Injuries, suspensions and Melbourne’s untimely bye have made the round a minefield.

Many SuperCoaches will be forced to reluctantly burn a Trade Boost just to get 17 – or less – on the park.

LOSERS FROM TEAMS

1 Josh Schuster – Not named for the Sea Eagles as he battles an ongoing quad complaint. He’s a hold in the hope we can eek out more cash and cover round 13, but jeez this is getting frustrating.

2 Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad - Out due to an Anzac Day concussion. And given it was his second serious concussion of the season, there’s the chance he sits out more than one week.

3 Tom Trbojevic - Named by the Sea Eagles but at long odds to play due to a groin injury. Even if he does play it will surely be under duress and he’s hardly set the world on fire this year. With Origin also looming, he’s a sell, even with the good match-up against the Titans at 4 Pines Park. Most sold player.

4 Tohu Harris – Set to be sidelined for a considerable period after going down against the Storm with an aggravation of the knee injury that recently kept him out for a fortnight. Obvious sell.

5 Payne Haas - Out for a week due to a hip drop suspension. But he’s a definite hold given he’s a massive 15 points per game clear at prop.

6 Sunia Turuva – Named but in doubt with an ankle injury. He was a sell anyway after peaking at a handy profit and offering no round 13 coverage.

7/8 Harry Grant and Cameron Munster - The Storm duo are on the bye this week. They therefore have only three NRL games between now and Origin and plenty are selling. Grant to Jeremy Marshall-King makes some sense given JMK is one of the only hookers capable of challenging Grant, plus he covers round 13. But realistically, it’s a huge luxury trade for those who won the lotto on this week’s injuries. Likewise, Munster to Cody Walker or Dylan Brown makes sense for round 13 coverage, but it’s unlikely to be viable given all the drama over the weekend. So with all that said, Grant and Munster are both holds, especially after their Anzac Day heroics.

9/10/11 William Warbrick, Eliesa Katoa, Christian Welch – While Grant and Munster are holds, these three Storm players are sells after jobs well done. Warbrick has peaked at a $201,400 profit and can be cashed in for Croker or switched sideways to Tyrell Sloan. Katoa copped a concussion against the Warriors and only scored 21 points. He now sits with a BE of 106 so take the $134,700 and run. Welch has been serviceable as a FRF2 but realistically an average of 51 doesn’t quite cut it for a starting prop.

12 Reuben Garrick - Switches to centre for the Sea Eagles where he’ll get less ball and like all Sea Eagles could struggle for attacking stats without Turbo. Hold and hope.

13 Joey Manu - Last week’s most popular buy was impressive at five-eighth on Anzac Day, notching 90 points including a try with linebreak. But perhaps most important from a SuperCoach perspective were the 13 runs and eight tackle busts – which is basically Nicho Hynes areas for a playmaker. Did he do enough to keep his spot ahead of Sam Walker? Well, put it this way. Manu was good (maybe very good), Walker had a “frustrating” outing in reserves and Luke Keary won man-of-the-match after switching to halfback. So why is he on the loser’s list? Well, in somewhat of a shock in the post-match presser, coach Trent Robinson refused to guarantee Manu’s spot in the halves. “I don’t know,” Robinson said. “I made a call for this week. It’s a tough one. We’ve got injuries in the backline so there are a few things to throw up.” There is talk Walker could return to the halves with Manu moving into the backline due to the injury to Daniel Tupou (hamstring).

WINNERS FROM TEAMS

* Jarrod Croker - Huge cheapie boost with Croker retaining his centre spot despite Jordan Rapana (head cut) returning. Even with Nick Cotric (hamstring) and potentially Xavier Savage (playing NSW Cup) to come back in, surely Croker’s job security is locked in for a significant period. After averaging 40 in base over two games and setting up a price rise of $22,000, Croker is popular yet again.

* Haze Dunster - The popular cheapie earns reprieve after a late axing last week, taking the spot of Bailey Simonsson (concussion) in the Parramatta backline. And with Simonsson’s history of concussions (four in the last two-and-a-half years), there’s the chance he stays there for a few more weeks. That said, the fact Dunster was dumped before kick-off last week shows Simonsson is ahead in the pecking order so job security is shaky, while the BE of 38 is hardly appealing. Last resort cheapie.

* Kalyn Ponga - It was great to see Ponga back from a concussion lay-off and he immediately got to work with an impressive 58 points in 53 minutes, including a try assist, two linebreak assists and two offloads. While there are only four games until Origin and he could be forced to sit out again at any stage, he’s a tempting replacement for Turbo at just $506,000.

* Nathan Cleary - Named despite Twitter chat he may be rested against the struggling Tigers due to a minor groin issue. Huge captaincy option this week if we get word he’s back goalkicking.

* Jahream Bula - Retains the fullback spot at Tigers after a promising debut with 38 points, including 21 runs and five tackles busts. That’s a very SuperCoach-friendly stat line. But even with the undoubted talent, he’s almost impossible to fit in at fullback – the highest scoring position in SuperCoach.

BUY

* Ryan Matterson - Put simply, you won’t find a safer buy in SuperCoach – his base of 61 is basically unheard of, the average of 72.8 is fourth best in the position and he covers every tough bye round. With a BE of 69, he can wait a week or three but he’ll be the most purchased player in all of SuperCoach between now and round 13.

* Joe Tapine – Very popular buy as SuperCoaches rush to replace Payne Haas (he’s a hold for mine), Eliesa Katoa and Tohu Harris. Tapine’s consistency this season is barely-believable (high score 67 and low score 57) and he is averaging a massive 55 points in base stats. All he needs are a few attacking stats, which we know he’s capable of, and the dual position flexibility is delightful. The second most important forward buy for round 13 behind Matterson.

* James Tedesco - Returned to somewhere near his best in the Anzac Day clash with 75 points including a try, 20 runs and seven tackle busts. What’s more, he is available for $567,800, which has to be some sort of all-time record. That’s a $268,500 discount on his starting price.

* Tyrell Sloan – Turned the Anzac Day clash on its head with brilliant attack and now sits with a BE of -36 ahead of a run of great match-ups against the Bulldogs, Titans and Cowboys. Most purchased player this week as KFC SuperCoaches chase a quick mid-range cash grab and round 13 coverage. But beware of inconsistency – he has two scores of 15 this year and his base is a very shaky 16.

SELL

* Reece Walsh - After a stellar average of 95 over this first six games, Walsh produced his first “poor” score of the season against the Eels with 38. That means he is finally starting to leak cash (BE of 98). Walsh benefited from a dream draw to start the year, but his run until Origin is about as tough as it comes – Souths, Manly, Melbourne, Panthers. Time to cash in at a $234,800 profit.
