NRL teams Round 14: What potential Origin restings mean for SuperCoach, Jack Bird out

NRL coaches have left us hanging on which players will and won’t back-up from State of Origin – but here’s how KFC SuperCoaches can cash in.

KFC SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 14

Teams are in for Round 14 and we were hoping to get a picture of the players to be rested post-Origin.

But in the main, NRL coaches have left us hanging.

Wayne Bennett, the super coach himself, is again the hero of the KFC SuperCoach community by letting us know early that Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Tom Gilbert will be rested.

The duo won’t make the long trip from Adelaide to Auckland on a two-day turnaround and we thank Mr Bennett for telling us in advance.

Other coaches haven’t been so kind though. In fact, Tabuai-Fidow and Gilbert are the only two Origin players confirmed out this week, with all others either named in their usual spots or on extended benches.

In other words, KFC SuperCoaches are set for yet another nervous wait on many stars – especially those playing on Sunday like Nathan Cleary, Cameron Munster, Harry Grant and Valentine Holmes.

WINNERS

* Jacob Kiraz CTW $486,400 – Covering rounds 16 and 19, the Bulldogs are a popular team for bye coverage and Kiraz is the pick of that team. A high workrate outside back with plenty of tackle busts and offloads, he’s hard to leave out at a bargain price (for him) after some injury issues. That said, he does have a BE of 52 and still looks somewhat hampered by the MCL injury picked up in April.

* Joey Manu 5/8-CTW $639,100 - Back from the bye and, despite chat he’d return to the centres, named in our preferred SuperCoach position of five-eighth. He’s set to stay there for a while with the return of Sam Walker (knee) delayed by 2-3 weeks.

* Tyrone Peachey CTW/2RF $452,300 – The star cheapie has been named in his usual centre position for the Panthers. But with Izack Tago (pectoral) named in reserves and looking to return from injury, Peachey’s time in the top grade could be limited.

LOSERS

* Jack Bird CTW/2RF $577,200 – Very popular buy from last week will miss at least the next two games for the Dragons due to knee soreness. Sell.

* Dylan Brown, Greg Marzhew, J’Maine Hopgood, Josh Schuster, Kalyn Ponga - The Eels, Knights and Sea Eagles are on the bye this week. These are three of the most popular teams in SuperCoach so it makes for a tough round. But all players mentioned are either SuperCoach keepers or great money-makers. Don’t even think about selling.

* Jarrod Croker CTW $425,200 - Rested this week as coach Ricky Stuart prefers to stage his 300th game at home in round 15. An upgrade to Kiraz only costs $61,000.

BUY

* Jahream Bula FLB $452,400 - After a massive 124 point game in round 12, Bula is projected to gain $150K over the next two games and all he needs to achieve that is scores in the mid 60s. Provides cover for rounds 16 and 19 which adds further to his appeal, but gee, hopefully you got on five games ago when he was $250,000 cheaper.

* Briton Nikora 2RF $709,300 – Covers rounds 16 and 19, is ineligible for Origin and probably behind only J’Maine Hopgood in terms of 2RF’s that do so. However, his price is high (as is the BE at 79). For $120K less you can get John Bateman who seems to be running into form and fitness.

BONUS BUY

This is the player who is not in the top-10 most purchased list. In fact he’s currently 56th on that list but deserves to be higher.

Jake Turpin HOK $232,600 – The injury to Brandon Smith opens the door for Turpin to play 60-80 minutes at hooker for the Roosters for the next 6-8 weeks. He’s not flashy, he’s not fancy but he will make 40+ tackles and priced at $232K could make you around $200K while providing a way out of the likes of Soni Luke and also covering the round 16 bye.

JUST RELAX

* Corey Horsburgh 2RF/FRF $619,600 – Last week really was the time to get ‘Horse’ and he has to be just one injury to the Queensland backrow away from Origin selection, so definitely a trade to wait until Thursday to make (if at all).

* Dylan Edwards FLB $805,600 - You can’t question the form. But you can question the value at $800K and with a BE of 112. He has a nice matchup though against the Dragons, but anyone buying will want Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai to get through Origin unscathed.

* Nick Meaney CTW/FLB $692,600 – A monster BE (98), a nice matchup (Cowboys) and his key playmaker (Cameron Munster) engaged in Origin. Not a favourite buy at the position.

HOLD

* Reuben Garrick CTW/FLB $701,800 - People doing this must have trades to BURN. Garrick has an average of 70PPG and 3RA of 84. Season keeper.

* Tom Trbojevic FLB $666,900 – Turbo scored 165 points in round 12 and 82 points in round 10. The best SuperCoach back in history may very well be back. However, his Origin selection and Manly’s bye rotation mean the star will – at best – only cover three games in the next five. But you’ll want to buy him back.

SELL

* Latrell Mitchell FLB $813,600 – Out for 1-3 weeks due to a calf injury. With his Origin schedule, he’ll miss plenty of footy over the next few months and is therefore a sell.

* Isaiya Katoa HFB-5/8 $344,900 – Most popular sell this week. He’s done his job in making almost $150,000 and covering last week’s bye.

* Lachlan Miller CTW/FLB $613,400 - Those who held last week were lucky Miller did not take to the ground late as a sub and thus lose more value.

* Jackson Ford 2RF $497,500 - Price has peaked at a massive $214K rise. Time to cash in.

Bird blow for battling Dragons

—Michael Carayannis

St George Illawarra will rest up Jack Bird for at least the next two games.

Bird won’t play the Panthers on Sunday and South Sydney the following week.

He has had general soreness in his knee so the Dragons plan to rest him to allow Bird to fully recover.

Jack Bird will be rested for two weeks.
