NRL Round 17 teams winners & losers: Kurt Capewell out for Broncos, Cody Walker returns for Rabbitohs

The Broncos have suffered a massive blow with a star set to be sidelined until Round 20, while the Rabbitohs have welcomed back a star from injury. See full teams analysis.

The teams are in for round 17 and as always there are some big winners and losers - with a potential mid-season cheapie popping up at the Dolphins and injury cruelling a key player for the Broncos.

WINNERS FROM TEAMS

* Cody Walker 5/8 $813,100 - Back from a quad injury and is a strong buy this week. Walker - provided he is not selected for Origin III - will be a big inclusion for teams in the final bye round. You can turn Jahream Bula into Walker for just an extra $100K, that’s a win.

* Valynce Te Whare CTW $258,200 - ‘Val Meninga’ is named to start in the centres with Brenko Lee (calf) out. Also at the Dolphins we have a CHEAPIE ALERT with Brayden McGrady named on the wing in place of Robert Jennings. McGrady (who will be added to the SuperCoach site overnight) has scored 10 tries in 11 games in the QCup this year and will be base price. Cha Ching!

* Greg Marzhew CTW $675,300 - Returns after missing last week due to discplinary reasons. It’s another away game so let’s hope Marzhew doesn’t miss the bus again.

* Brendan Piakura 2RF $251,000 - Named to replace Kurt Capewell (see below), could be a cheapie pick up though will not help in round 19 with the Broncos having a bye.

LOSERS

* Kurt Capewell 2RF $452,000 - The veteran Bronco is out with a quadriceps injury until round 20.

* Joey Manu 5/8|CTW $570,200 - A gun at fullback, a maybe at five-eighth, Manu is a no-go zone at CTW and that’s where he returns with James Tedesco named at fullback and Luke Keary in the halves (after being cleared of a facial fracture).

* Latrell Mitchell FLB $813,600 - Not named (calf) and then a risk of being picked for the Blues for Origin III should he recover...might be a reluctant SuperCoach sell for many.

* Eliesa Katoa - Not named (eye) and has a monster BE after being limited to just 11 minutes in round 15. Time to upgrade.

* Tom Trbojevic FLB $762,900 - Named in the reserves, may still play depending on how he pulls up from Origin on Wednesday. Was in the top-five most bought list prior to teams and I expect that to change now.

* Zac Hosking 2RF $479,600 - Named on the interchange bench for the Panthers. Time to sell.

BUY/HOLD/SELL ANALYSIS

Shaun Johnson: BUY – A great pick up ‘SJ’ ticks almost all the boxes with tremendous form (a 5RA of 86.4), covers the final big bye (the Warriors do have one bye left but it’s in round 22 and thus easily covered) and a matchup this week (Dragons) that screams captaincy option. I say ‘almost all’ as the price, $705K, is not nice. I have two trade plans this week depending on Origin, SJ comes in on one of them and terrifies me in the one where I don’t pick him.

Cameron Munster: AVOID – I’m not sure about this one … No doubt Munster is a great of the game, but he does not help with the round 19 bye so I think the time to pick him up is round 20 onwards.

Clint Gutherson: RISKY BUY – King Gutho has the most points of any player so far this year and comes into the game off consecutive 130+ point games. With a -14 BE and a decent matchup (Dolphins away) I can see the appeal. However, keep in mind he then misses round 18, a factor which makes me think the time to get him is heading into round 19 not now.

Joey Manu: AVOID – Joey did what Joey does when selected at fullback, running the ball a billion times and scoring 117 points. And while my colleague Buzz Rothfield is pushing for the Roosters to move Manu to fullback full-time and shift James Tedesco to five-eighth I’m not sure it’s going to happen. At best, Manu moves to five-eighth this week but there’s a strong chance he plays at centre – pass.

Harry Grant: AVOID – See above, everything I wrote about Cam Munster applies here.

Campbell Graham: BUY – An elite CTW, no arguments here. Of course watch Origin, injury to the NSW centres could see Graham called in.

Keaon Koloamatangi: BUY – One of the buys of the round IMO. The South Sydney monster started this season on fire before cut down by injury in round seven. Still not 100% in his three games back in terms of base output his attacking danger was clear with two tries and a try assist from the three games he has played on return. Just the one fear – he deserves Origin selection and injuries, or a bad beat on Wednesday night, may well see him selected thus missing round 19.

Kalyn Ponga: BUY – He’s back baby! Ever since announcing his unavailability for the Maroons, Ponga has been on fire. No round 19 cover, but he is still decent value and worth a buy.

Tino Fa’asuamaleaui: BUY – Big Tino is my ‘non-SJ’ buy and one I’m really warming to. Sure the big unit is no help in round 19 (assuming Billy Slater does not drop him from the Maroons, and his price is not a bargain, but I feel he is a must for the run home and I’m tempted to just pay up now and lock him away.

Ryan Matterson: WAIT – Not a big buy this week after his poor (for SuperCoach) performance as a fill in five-eighth last week, but Matto should be on your radar for next week when his price will be cherry ripe.

Jahream Bula: SELL – The biggest sell call of the round IMO. I’m not against holding Bula – he scored 43 against the Storm playing without Luke Brooks and Api Koroisau after all – but I also think there’s lots of value to be realised here and I’m tempted to turn him into Cody Walker (via Kalyn Ponga).

Josh Schuster: SELL – Barring another big attacking game Schuster has likely peaked in price and he has a couple of tough games ahead. No help in round 19 and so can see why many selling.

Nathan Cleary/Dylan Brown: SELL – Too much value in both to let them sit in your reserves.
