NRL SuperCoach teams analysis Round 13
The teams are in and Origin is causing carnage, while a host of big guns have been named to return.
SuperCoach
Don't miss out on the headlines from SuperCoach. Followed categories will be added to My News.
WINNERS
* Origin players - All Origin stars have been named to back up, except Josh Morris (not SuperCoach relevant).
* John Bateman - Returned well ahead of schedule last week from a fractured cheekbone and is therefore the most purchased player. Bateman is a keeper right to the end, but doesn’t cover Round 16 and has a break even of 104.
* Esan Marsters, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Cameron Smith, Andrew Fifita - Genuine keepers with Round 16 coverage. All sit in the most purchased players this week.
* Kotoni Staggs - Cheapie of the week. Assured a long-term spot at the Broncos following James Roberts’ move to the Rabbitohs and the season ending injury to Jack Bird (ACL). Staggs has a SuperCoach-friendly game and is dual position.
* Tom Trbojevic - The SuperCoach superstar returns from back-to-back hamstring injuries. However, he’s a wait-and-see due to lack of Round 16 coverage, probable Origin selection and high rate of injury recurrence for hamstrings.
* Shaun Johnson - Has jagged a spot on the Cronulla extended bench as he aims to return from a hamstring injury. Keep Johnson on your watchlist as he is a proven keeper with Round 16 coverage and no Origin. With a break even of 99, SuperCoaches can take a sighter this week.
* Nathan Brown - Proven keeper named to return after a long lay-off due to a pectoral injury. Doesn’t cover Round 16.
LOSERS
* Sam Burgess - Will play this week before going for a shoulder operation. The surgery is expected to sideline the English enforcer for five weeks, but because of how the State of Origin schedule impacts the NRL draw, he will miss as little as two games. Most sold player this week.
* Damien Cook, Cameron Murray, Kalyn Ponga, David Klemmer - The Rabbitohs and Knights have a turnaround of less than 48 hours between Origin and kick-off at 6pm Friday, making these players prime candidates for resting, despite being named.
* Hudson Young - Fourth most sold player after being suspended for five weeks for eye gouging. Take the $180,000 and run.
* Corey Waddell - The popular cheapie/bye purchase is out for two weeks through suspension and should be sold at a massive $240,000 profit.
* Corey Harawira-Naera - CHN looked a fair dinkum keeper a few weeks ago, but he has missed the squad again under the unpredictable Dean Pay. Doesn’t play Round 16, so it’s time to sell.
* Reuben Garrick, Corey Allan, Maika Sivo, Bryce Cartwright, Tevita Tatola - These early season cheapies have done their jobs, making stacks of money and covering Round 12. Time to cash in for players with Round 16 coverage.
Rabbitohs vs Knights
Friday, June 7th, 6:00pm, ANZ Stadium
Rabbitohs: 1. Corey Allen 2. Mawene Hiroti 3. James Roberts 4. Dane Gagai 5. Campbell Graham 6. Cody Walker 7. Adam Reynolds 8. George Burgess 9. Damien Cook 10. Tom Burgess 11. John Sutton 12. Sam Burgess 13. Cameron Murray
Interchange: 14. Tevita Tatola 15. Ethan Lowe 16. Liam Knight 17. Mark Nicholls
Reserves: 18. Bayley Sironen 19. Connor Tracey 20. Adam Doueihi 21. Dean Britt
Team news: Cody Walker, Damien Cook, Dane Gagai and Cameron Murray have been named to back up from Origin. James Roberts will make his club debut at right centre. Sam Burgess will play this week before going for a shoulder operation. The surgery is expected to sideline the English enforcer for five weeks, but because of how the State of Origin schedule impacts the NRL draw, he will miss as little as two games.
SuperCoach analysis: Corey Allan is the sixth most sold player. It’s fair to say he’s been a disappointment, only making $75,000 despite the pre-season hype after he strolled over for a few in the Charity Shield. He’s a sell before Round 16. But there’s no money to make on the trade to Staggs or Aitken, so there are more pressing trades this week. Sam Burgess is the most sold player following news he is carrying a shoulder and will be sent for surgery after this round, missing five weeks. Burgess has averaged just 43 in the last three rounds despite playing close to 80 minutes every round, with injury no doubt a factor.
However, Burgess could provide an (early) extra number this week and is a hold for now, pending whatever craziness Origin has in store for SuperCoaches. With a BE of 74, his price should stay fairly steady. Also, a big shout out to Tevita Tatola. Sangster’s Paradise had held all season just for this round, and he promptly crossed for a try. All eyes are on Origin (and Wacko’s Whispers) to see if Damien Cook, Cody Walker and Cameron Murray back up.
Knights: 1. Kalyn Ponga 2. Edrick Lee 3. Hymel Hunt 4. Jesse Ramien 5. Shaun Kenny-Dowall 6. Kurt Mann 7. Mitchell Pearce 8. David Klemmer 9. Connor Watson 10.Daniel Saifiti 11. Lachlan Fitzgibbon 12. Mitchell Barnett 13. Tim Glasby
Interchange: 14. Jamie Buhrer 15. Herman Ese’ese 16. James Gavet 17. Sione Mata’utia
Reserves: 18. Josh King 19. Pasami Saulo 20. Tautau Moga 21. Mason Lino
Team news: Kalyn Ponga and David Klemmer have been named to back up from Origin, although it’s unclear if they will be risked with the tight 48-hour turnaround. Connor Watson will play hooker in place of Danny Levi (ankle), with Kurt Mann to continue at five-eighth. Mitchell Pearce (groin) is expected to overcome a minor injury. Mason Lino has been named on the extended bench.
SuperCoach analysis: The only two things that matter here are if Kalyn Ponga (owned by 51 per cent) and David Klemmer (23 per cent) back up from Origin. Coach Nathan Brown has already suggested they won’t. But thankfully the Knights play the first game and SuperCoaches will know for sure before initial lockout.
Tigers vs Raiders
Friday, June 7th, 7:55pm, BankWest Stadium
Tigers: 1. Moses Mbye 2. Robert Jennings 3. Paul Momirovski 4. Esan Marsters 5. Corey Thompson 6. Benji Marshall 7. Luke Brooks 8. Ben Matulino 9. Robbie Farah 10. Alex Twal 11. Ryan Matterson 12. Chris McQueen 13. Matthew Eisenhuth
Interchange: 14. Jacon Liddle 15. Thomas Mikaele 16. Josh Aloiai 17. Michael Chee-Kam
Reserves: 18. David Nofoaluma 19. Elijah Taylor 20. Chris Lawrence 21. Mahe Fonua
Team news: Moses Mbye has been named to back up despite a minor injury concern heading into Queensland camp. Mbye’s return sees Corey Thompson return to the wing and David Nofoaluma drop out of the side. Rumours of Dallin Watene-Zelezniak’s arrival at the club appear premature with DWZ not named in the squad. Chris Lawrence (broken jaw) has been named on the extended bench as he aims to return from a long lay-off.
SuperCoach analysis: The Tigers are very popular for SuperCoach right now as they cover Round 16. Esan Marsters is the second most purchased player and the crowd is on the money. Marsters has achieved a rare CTW feat by backing up for two keeper seasons in a row. The Tigers centre is rocking a 61.3 average this year, a shade ahead of his 60.8 last year. He’s a must-have before Round 16, it’s just a matter of when (BE 70 so there’s no rush). Ryan Matterson is also a massive option for the next bye after scoring the 14th most points of any player. But Matto is well-and-truly in Origin calculations (named 18th man for the first clash) and SuperCoaches should therefore wait until teams are announced for Origin 3.
Raiders: 1. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 2. Bailey Simonsson 3. Jarrod Croker (c) 4. Nick Cotric 5. Jordan Rapana 6. Jack Wighton 7. Sam Williams 8. Josh Papalii 9. Siliva Havili 10. Dunamis Lui 11. John Bateman 12. Elliott Whitehead 13. Joseph Tapine
Interchange: 14. Tom Starling 15. Emre Guler 16. Sia Soliola 17. Ryan Sutton
Reserves: 18. Aidan Sezer 19. Royce Hunt 20. Michael Oldfield 21. Sebastian Kris
Team news: Jordan Rapana (knee) is a shock inclusion on the wing ahead of schedule. Hudson Young (suspension) is out for five weeks for an eye gouge, while Corey Horsburgh (elbow) is out for 2-3 weeks. Jack Wighton, Nick Cotric and Josh Papalii have been named to back up.
SuperCoach analysis: Logic says it’s time to rid your side of Raiders as they miss Round 16. But a couple of Canberra players are simply going too well to sell. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is a hold after scoring third most points of any CTW. And John Bateman is the most purchased player following his early return last week. That said, Jarrod Croker’s fall from grace has been rather sudden (three-game average 25.3) and he’s therefore the sixth most sold player. However, Croker is the most consistent CTW in SuperCoach over last six years, possibly all-time, and Sangster’s Paradise are holding on pedigree.
Warriors vs Storm
Saturday, June 8th, 3:00pm, Mt Smart Stadium
Warriors: 1 Roger Tuivasa-Sheck (c) 2 David Fusitu’a 3 Peta Hiku 4 Patrick Herbert 5 Ken Maumalo 6 Kodi Nikorima 7 Blake Green 8 Agnatius Paasi 9 Issac Luke 10 Leeson Ah Mau 11 Isaiah Papali’i 12 Tohu Harris 13 Adam Blair
Interchange: 14 Lachlan Burr 15 Bunty Afoa 16 Chris Satae 17 Karl Lawton
Reserves: 18 Gerard Beale 20 Leivaha Pule 21 Jackson Frei 22 Chanel Harris-Tavita
Team news: Agnatius Paasi (suspension) returns at starting prop, with Adam Blair moving to lock and Lachlan Burr dropping to the bench. Chris Satae replaces Jazz Tevaga (ankle) on the bench.
SuperCoach analysis: Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is pretty close to a must ahead of Round 16. He is the sixth most purchased player and is already owned by a quarter of teams. Tohu Harris is hardly the worst bye coverage player. While he’s not quite in the top tier of 2RFs (currently ranked 11th for points), he covers Round 16 and is a solid 18th, 19th or 20th man for the run home. Somewhat surprisingly, Harris’s average has stayed steady this year despite the exit of inside man Shaun Johnson.
Storm: 1. Jahrome Hughes 2. Suliasi Vunivalu 3. Will Chambers 4. Marion Seve 5. Josh Addo-Carr 6. Cameron Munster 7. Brodie Croft 8. Jesse Bromwich 9. Cameron Smith 10. Nelson Asofa-Solomona 11. Felise Kaufusi 12. Kenneath Bromwich 13. Dale Finucane
Interchange: 14. Brandon Smith 15. Joe Stimson 16. Tui Kamikamica 17. Ryan Papenhuyzen
Reserves: 18. Justin Olam 19. Patrick Kaufusi 20. Albert Vete 21. Sandor Earl
Team news: No changes. Josh Addo-Carr, Cameron Munster, Felise Kaufusi and Will Chambers have been named to back up.
SuperCoach analysis: Cameron Smith is the fifth most purchased player. The trade makes sense on pedigree and it’s hard to talk anyone out of it. However, with the BE of 109, it’s worth taking a look this week. The stats of Smith and Cameron McInnes are almost identical this season, except Smith is owned by 30 per cent compared to five per cent for McInnes. Food for thought for POD hunters.
Sharks vs Eels
Saturday, June 8th, 5:30pm, PointsBet Stadium
Sharks: 1. Matt Moylan 2. Sosaia Feki 3. Bronson Xerri 4. Josh Dugan 5. Aaron Gray 6. Kyle Flanagan 7. Chad Townsend 8. Andrew Fifita 9. Jayden Brailey 10. Matt Prior 11. Briton Nikora 12. Kurt Capewell 13. Paul Gallen (c)
Interchange: 14. Blayke Brailey 15. Jayson Bukuya 16. Jack Williams 17. Braden Hamlin-Uele
Reserves: 18. Scott Sorensen 19. Sione Katoa 20. Wade Graham 21. Shaun Johnson
Team news: NSW centre Josh Morris will be given a rest after Origin. Josh Dugan has been named at centre with Aaron Gray coming onto the wing. Star players Wade Graham (ACL) and Shaun Johnson (hamstring) have been included on the extended bench as they attempt to return from injury.
SuperCoach analysis: Shaun Johnson has been named and will play. The former Warrior is a SuperCoach great and will likely surge into the must-have category in the next fortnight. But with the BE at 99, SuperCaoches have time on their side. Andrew Fifita is the fourth most purchased player and those who don’t own the SuperCoach superstar shouldn’t overthink it, especially with the BE at a very achievable 38. Bronson Xerri finally caught onto a few last match and now has a BE of -38. He is predicted to rise by almost $100,000 before covering the Round 16 bye.
Eels: 1. Clinton Gutherson (c) 2. Maika Sivo 3. Michael Jennings 4. Josh Hoffman 5. Blake Ferguson 6. Will Smith 7. Mitch Moses 8. Kane Evans 9. Reed Mahoney 10. Junior Paulo 11. Shaun Lane 12. Manu Ma’u 13. Tepai Moeroa
Interchange: 14. Peni Terepo 15. Ray Stone 16. David Gower 17. Marata Niukore
Reserves: 18. Brad Takairangi 19. George Jennings 20. Tim Mannah 21. Nathan Brown
Team news: No changes to the 17 but Nathan Brown (pectoral) has been named on the extended bench as he aims to play his first match since Round 1.
SuperCoach analysis: SuperCoaches have a huge decision on Maika Sivo. The Fijian has made a massive $346,000 (even more than Briton Nikora), which places him among the greatest cheapies of all time. Optimists have even compared him to Semi Radradra. However, Sivo doesn’t cover Round 16 and has benefited from seven tries in the last six rounds. The straight swap to Marsters is very tempting.
Cowboys vs Sea Eagles
Saturday, June 8th, 7:30pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium
Cowboys: 1. Michael Morgan 2. Kyle Feldt 3. Mitchell Dunn 4. Tom Opacic 5. Enari Tuala 6. John Asiata 7. Jake Clifford 8. Josh McGuire 9. Jake Granville, 10. Jordan McLean 11. Gavin Cooper 12. Coen Hess 13. Jason Taumalolo
Interchange: 14. Reuben Cotter 15. Shane Wright 16. Scott Bolton 17. Francis Molo
Reserves: 18. Peter Hola 19. Javid Bowen 20. Corey Jensen 21. Emry Pete
Team news: Michael Morgan has been switched to fullback in place of Jordan Kahu (shoulder), provided the Queensland representative backs up from Origin. Josh McGuire has also been named to back up. Winger Gideon Gela-Mosby (collarbone) is out, replaced by Enari Tuala. Kurt Baptiste (suspension) is replaced on the bench by debutant Reuben Cotter.
SuperCoach analysis: Jason Taumalolo went large as the most popular captain last week (he would have cracked a ton even without the try). He is the obvious skipper option every week over the byes as Origin players are inevitably eased through.
Sea Eagles: 1. Tom Trbojevic 2. Jorge Taufua 3. Dylan Walker 4. Moses Suli 5. Reuben Garrick, 6. Cade Cust 7. Kane Elgey 8. Addin Fonua-Blake, 9. Apisai Koroisau 10. Martin Taupau 11. Joel Thompson 12. Curtis Sironen 13. Jack Gosiewski
Interchange: 14. Manase Fainu 15. Brendan Elliot 16. Morgan Boyle 17. Taniela Paseka
Reserves: 18. Jake Trbojevic 19. Daly Cherry-Evans 20 Haumole Olakau’atu 21. Lloyd Perrett
Team news: Des Hasler’s side welcome back plenty of big guns. Tom Trbojevic (hamstring) returns from a long lay-off at fullback. Daly Cherry-Evans (ankle/Origin) and Jake Trbojevic (Origin) have also been named, but on the extended bench. Brendan Elliot drops to the bench to accommodate Tommy Turbo. Jack Gosiewski starts at lock in place of Corey Waddell (suspension).
SuperCoach analysis: Tommy Turbo is back and plenty of SuperCoaches are excited, probably over-excited. Trbojevic is well-overrepresented in this week’s top trades (currently the third most purchased player). Here are four reasons to hold off. 1) Fullback is the most stacked position in SuperCoach — plenty are already rocking two guns in RTS and Teddy. 2) If Turbo stays fit he likely plays both remaining Origins. 3) He definitely misses Round 16 due to Manly’s bye. 4) As NRL Physio tells us, hamstrings have the highest rate of reoccurrence of any injury (30 per cent).
Addin Fonua-Blake is one of SuperCoach revelations of the season. He has the second highest average of any prop and his PPM of 1.46 verges on the greatest of all time for a big minute player.
Broncos vs Titans
Sunday, June 9th, 2:00pm, Suncorp Stadium
Broncos: 1. Darius Boyd 2. Corey Oates 3. Kotoni Staggs 4. Gehamat Shibasaki 5. Jamayne Isaako 6. Anthony Milford 7. Tom Dearden 8. Matthew Lodge 9. Jake Turpin 10. Payne Haas 11. Alex Glenn 12. Matt Gillett 13. Tevita Pangai Junior
Interchange: 14. Andrew McCullough 15. David Fifita 16. Thomas Flegler 17. Joe Ofahengaue
Reserves: 18. Patrick Carrigan 19. Jaydn Su’A 20. Richard Kennar 21. Sean O’Sullivan
Team news: Andrew McCullough (knee) returns eight weeks ahead of schedule, but Jake Turpin retains the starting spot. Young gun Thomas Flegler (back) also returns, pushing Patrick Carrigan to the extended bench. Corey Oates, Matt Gillett, Payne Haas, David Fifita and Joe Ofahengaue have been named to back up.
SuperCoach analysis: Kotoni Staggs is the cheapie of the week by a decent distance. His job security is as good as it gets, with Jack Bird (ACL) and James Roberts (Rabbitohs) no longer competing for spots. Staggs has hardly set the world on fire since being promoted to start, averaging 33 in that time. However, he has a SuperCoach-friendly game and once scored 68 in 27 minutes. A big score is just around the corner. Over 50 per cent of SuperCoaches have their fingers crossed Payne Haas backs up.
Titans: 1. AJ Brimson 2. Anthony Don 3. Jesse Arthars 4. Brian Kelly 5. Dale Copley 6. Tyrone Roberts 7. Ashley Taylor 8. Jarrod Wallace 9. Mitch Rein 10. Moe Fotuaika 11. Kevin Proctor 12. Keegan Hipgrave 13. Jai Arrow
Interchange: 14. Tyrone Peachey 15. Shannon Boyd 16. Bryce Cartwright 17. Jai Whitbread
Reserves: 18. Jack Stockwell 19. Max King 20. Riley Jacks 21. Nathan Peats
Team news: Just the one expected change with Jai Arrow returning at lock. Jai Whitbread drops to the bench with Jack Stockwell dropping out of the 17. Nathan Peats (pectoral) is lurking in the extended squad as he attempts to return from serious injury.
SuperCoach analysis: The most relevant player here is Jai Arrow, with a quarter of sides hoping he backs up. Bryce Cartwright is a sell after making almost $200,000 and losing his starting spot for the last two weeks.
Panthers vs Roosters
Sunday, June 9th, 4:00pm, Panthers Stadium
Panthers: 1. Dylan Edwards 2. Josh Mansour, 3. Isaah Yeo 4. Brent Naden 5. Brian To’o 6. Jarome Luai 7. James Maloney 8. James Tamou 9. Wayde Egan 10. Reagan Campbell-Gillard 11. Viliame Kikau 12. Frank Winterstein 13. James Fisher-Harris
Interchange: 14.Sione Katoa, 15. Liam Martin 16. Moses Leota 17. Hame Sele
Reserves: 18. Kaide Ellis 19. Caleb Aekins 20. Mitchell Kenny 21. Nathan Cleary
Team news: Viliame Kikau (illness) returns with Liam Martin moving back to the bench and and Mitch Kenny dropping out of the 17. Wayde Egan (shoulder) returns at starting hooker with Sione Katoa dropping to the bench. Former Origin prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard has been named to start for Tim Grant (pectoral). NSW rep Nathan Cleary has been included on the extended bench.
SuperCoach analysis: Brian To’o is flying as a cheapie, scoring consecutive 50s in base. He is predicted to peak just in time for a sell before the Round 16 bye at a $150,000 profit ... and that’s without attacking stats.
Roosters: 1. James Tedesco, 2. Daniel Tupou, 3. Latrell Mitchell, 4. Joseph Manu, 5. Matt Ikuvalu, 6. Drew Hutchison, 7. Cooper Cronk, 8. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, 9. Victor Radley, 10. Sio Siua Taukeiaho, 11. Boyd Cordner , 12. Angus Crichton, 13. Isaac Liu
Interchange: 14. Nat Butcher, 15. Zane Tetevano, 16. Sitili Tupouniua 17. Mitchell Aubusson
Reserves: 18. Poasa Faamausili, 19. Ryan Hall 20. Lindsay Collins 21. Sam Verrills
Team news: Origin stars James Tedesco, Boyd Cordner, Angus Crichton and Latrell Mitchell have been named to back up. Former Dragon Drew Hutchison scores a starting halves spot in place of Luke Keary (concussion). Prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves has been suspensed for two games after being found guilty of dangerous contact.
SuperCoach analysis: Siosiua Taukeiaho is one of the better PODs heading into Round 16, currently at just five per cent ownership. This is not the week to move (BE 107), but he sits in the borderline keeper category at both 2RF and FRF and will take on goalkicking duties when Latrell Mitchell is rested or on Blues duty. Take out TKO’s injury-affected game and he has averaged a keeper-like 68 — only six running forwards have averaged more this season.
Bulldogs vs Dragons
Monday, June 10th, 4:00pm, ANZ Stadium
Bullodgs: 1. Nick Meaney 2. Christian Crichton 3.Marcelo Montoya 4. Will Hopoate 5. Reimis Smith 6. Kieran Foran 7. Jack Cogger 8. Aiden Tolman 9. Jeremy Marshall-King 10. Ofahiki Ogden 11. Josh Jackson 12. Raymond Faitala-Mariner 13. Adam Elliot
Interchange: 14. Rhyse Martin 15. Danny Fualalo 16. Chris Smith 17. Sauaso Sue
Reserves: 19. Lachlan Lewis 20.Corey Harawira-Naera 21. Michael Lichaa 23. Dylan Napa
Team news: Dylan Napa has been named on the extended bench as he aims to return from Origin duty.
SuperCoach analysis: No-one knows what coach Dean Pay is doing so all Canterbury players are sells, especially given they miss Round 16. Corey Harawira-Naera and Rhyse Martin appeared lock-in keepers a month ago, but both have fallen out of favour, proving Pay cannot be trusted by SuperCaoches. After this week, no fit Bulldogs player will be owned by more than 10 per cent, making them the least popular team in SuperCoach.
Dragons: 1. Matt Dufty 2. Jonus Pearson 3. Euan Aitken 4. Zac Lomax 5. Mikaele Ravalawa 6. Corey Norman 7. Jai Field 8. Blake Lawrie 9. Cameron McInnes 10. Korbin Sims 11. Jacob Host 12. Tariq Sims 13. Luciano Leilua
Interchange: 14. Jeremy Latimore 15. Reece Robson 16.Lachlan Timm 17. Josh Kerr
Reserves: 18. Jordan Pereira 19. Mitchell Allgood 20. Ben Hunt 21. Tyson Frizell
Team news: Origin players Tyson Frizell, Ben Hunt and Paul Vaughan have been named to back up, but on the extended bench. Corey Norman (cheekbone) returns in the halves. The injury to James Graham (broken leg) sees Blake Lawrie shift to the front row and Luciano Leilua start at lock. Tim Lafai (ankle) is out with Zac Lomax returning to the centres and Matt Dufty named at fullback. Mikaele Ravalawa returns on the wing at the expense of Jordan Pereira, who has been named in the reserves.
SuperCoach analysis: Euan Aitken is a sneaky mid-range buy at $286,000. The Pambula product is a genuine alternative to Kotoni Staggs as a money-maker, albeit slightly out of genuine cheapie range. The former SuperCoach gun is cheap following three games off bench, but is back playing a full-time centre role where he has averaged over 50 for the last four seasons, which places him among the most consistent players at CTW. With a BE of 48, SuperCoaches can hold off a week a two.
