Wests Tigers hooker Jake Simpkin has been cleared of a serious ankle injury and named to start against South Sydney on Saturday after sending a scare through the camp in the win over Parramatta.
Simpkin looked to be in trouble on Easter Monday and it was initially feared he had suffered a fracture but scans on Tuesday revealed what was described by a club official as “only minor ligament damage”.
Experienced rake Jacob Liddle has been named as a reserve while the other hooking option Jock Madden retains his spot at No.14.

The Simpkin news at this stage means coach Michael Maguire won’t have to tinker with a winning combination, particularly his halves Jackson Hastings and Luke Brooks.
Feeling like a weight has been lifted off his back, Brooks is ready for his next challenge as a five-eighth when he comes up against South Sydney’s Cody Walker.
SCROLL DOWN FOR ROUND 7 TEAM LISTS
Brooks thrived in the win over the Eels without the extra responsibility of playing first receiver and the 177-game career halfback is willing to make his shift to No.6 a permanent one.
“Coming into the (Eels) game I just felt like the pressure was off me and I could just play whatever I saw … him just controlling the side and letting me just come in and out,” Brooks said. “I thought he was really good for us.
“I think that suits both of us better, he’s a good organiser and a good talker, he lead the team around well.”
Rabbitohs forward Tom Burgess has been named on the bench with Hame Sele to start, while Davvy Moale has been recalled with Isaiah Tass in the reserves.
In the Shire, Dale Finucane is out with concussion. Cameron McInnes will start at lock against Manly. Aiden Tolman will start for Braden Hamlin-Uele (pectoral) at prop with the forward set to be sidelined for up to three months.
Sione Katoa’s (knee) return has pushed Mawene Hiroti out of Craig Fitzgibbon’s side. Briton Nikora (Covid protocols) will line-up in the backrow.
Manly’s Morgan Harper (Covid protocols) takes his place in the centres at Tolutau Koula’s expense. Taniela Paseka has been promoted into the starting side for Josh Aloiai (shoulder).
Canterbury coach Trent Barrett has backed Kyle Flanagan at halfback against Brisbane. Centre Braidon Burns (hamstring) and backrower Chris Patolo (concussion) are replaced by Aaron Schoupp and Corey Waddell respectively.
Te Maire Martin will make an emotional comeback from retirement (brain bleed) at fullback in his first game since April 2019. Tyson Gamble is favoured over Billy Walters in the No.6 jumper with Cory Paix coming in at hooker for Jake Turpin, who has been dropped. Payne Haas has served his one game ban and will start at prop.
It’s mixed news for Brad Arthur’s outside back stocks with centre Tom Opacic (neck) cleared to take on Newcastle but Marata Niukore (leg tightness) rested.
Will Penisini will replace Niukore at centre with Hayze Perham on the wing while prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard has been named after suffering an ankle injury against the Tigers.
Jake Arthur has earned a bench spot ahead of Mitch Rein.
The Knights welcome back Adam Clune (knee) with his round six replacement Phoenix Crossland shifting to the bench.
Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has opted for a new look back five for Sunday’s clash against Penrith. Winger Jordan Rapana will play at fullback with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad on the bench. Boom back Xavier Savage is on the wing. The Panthers are unchanged.
Tyrell Sloan is yet to earn a re-call with Moses Mbye to keep his job at fullback for St George Illawarra against the Sydney Roosters.
Paul Momirovski comes into Trent Robinson’s side for Kevin Naiqama in the centres. Sio Siua Taukeiaho has been named ahead of Daniel Suluka-Fifita on the bench.
Prop Jesse and backrower Kenny Bromwich are back from a Covid enforced lay-off to take their places in Melbourne’s starting side, pushing Brandon Smith and Trent Loiero to the bench against New Zealand. Ryan Papenhuyzen (ankle) is cleared to play.
Warriors forward Aaron Penne has shifted to the bench for Matt Lodge.
