NRL 2024 Round 12 teams, SuperCoach news: Josh Feledy a cheapie to watch at Tigers

The byes are looming and injuries are hitting hard. But there’s also plenty of light at the end of the tunnel for SuperCoaches, writes TOM SANGSTER.

SuperCoach NRL Podcast: Live Teams Reaction Round 12

Tom Sangster and Rob Sutherland reveal the players to target and avoid after another eventful teams day.

WINNERS FROM TEAMS

* Reece Walsh FLB $681,500 - Named to return from knee soreness in a huge boost for a quarter of SuperCoaches.

* Payne Haas FRF $668,100 – Made a dramatic exit from the field over the weekend with a foot injury. But he produced a miracle recovery, came back onto the field and has been named this week.

* Max Plath 2RF/5-8 $512,600 - The 2024 revelation is back from concussion. The Dolphins have the best schedule of any team, playing all three tough bye rounds.

* Josh Feledy CTW $238,900 - Big pre-season fancy named at centre for the Tigers. Job security is not great for now given Brent Naden and Justin Olam are only out for one week. But after a slow start to the season due to injury, Feledy has the talent to claim this spot for good, especially after coach Benji Marshall promised changes in his post-match press conference.

LOSERS FROM TEAMS

* Taylan May CTW $434,200 - Stood down by the Panthers indefinitely as he faces police charges and therefore the most sold player.

* Cameron Munster 5/8 $698,400 - Out for eight weeks due to a groin injury and will play injured when he returns, if at all. Sell.

* Tohu Harris 2RF $615,400 - The popular SuperCoach banker is again out with a hand injury following a late withdrawal last week.

* Nathan Cleary, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Shaun Johnson - All injured last week but plenty of SuperCoaches are only getting around to selling this week.

* David Armstrong, Kai Pearce-Paul and all Knights - On the bye this week. But the silver lining is that non-Origin Knights have arguably the best bye schedule in the comp. After this week’s break, the Knights play 2/3 big byes and all games in between.

SuperCoach NRL Buy, Hold, Sell Round 12

BUY (KEEPERS)

* Joseph Manu CTW $824,000 - Back from concussion this week and a serious purchase if you can create the cash. Won’t play Origin, has a bye schedule to die for, has scored the third most points of any player this year and will play in his favourite fullback position when/if James Tedesco is named for Origin.

* Dylan Edwards FLB $938,100 - If he misses Origin selection, Edwards is the most important purchase for round 13. If he makes Origin, he becomes somewhat of a problem. Either way, he’s the best player in SuperCoach this year so bye schedule barely matters.

* Matt Burton 5-8/HFB $759,400 - A huge chance for the Blues in jersey 6, 14, 18 or even a centre spot following the injury to Bradman Best over the weekend. That said, he’s the second best halfback in SuperCoach this year behind Nicho Hynes and if he misses Origin selection he has dream schedule of being available for 2/3 big byes, the first two no less. Conversely, if he plays Origin he misses 4/7, which will be very hard to cover.

* Dylan Brown HFB/5-8 $683,100 - After a slow start to the season, Brown has rewarded those who held him with a 5RA of 75.2PPG. Origin is not a concern for the Kiwi (unless the Maroons discover that his great grandmother once visited Brisbane) and he covers rounds 13, 14 and 19. Gains DPP this week. Strong buy.

* Eliesa Katoa 2RF $719,800 - Has been going great guns on the right edge for the Storm punching out around 50 in base to provide a safe floor and bagging plenty of meat pies too. The Storm are no help in round 13 but they do cover 14, 16 and 20 all of which will cause problems. Buy.

BUY (CASH COWS)

* Blaize Talagi CTW $410,000 - How good is this kid going at fullback? Two games, two tries, two assists and an average of 97.5. Clint Gutherson is due back in round 14 which is a bummer but with a BE of -68 if he can average around 60 over the next two you’ll bank a healthy $150K in that span. Solid buy.

* Sua Fa’alogo CTW/FLB $390,200 - Another stand-in fullback and one who has a limited shelf life (Ryan Papenhuyzen is pencilled in for a round 14 return also). Faalogo is no help in the round 13 bye but he does help in the tricky round 14 provided Papenhuyzen is not back then. One I am very tempted by because I feel, based on no evidence other than a hunch, that Papenhuyzen will be a little longer in the return. Buy, with risk.

* Kaeo Weekes 5-8/FLB $348,400 - I counselled against Weekes as a buy last week and boy was I wrong. Excellent to the eye against the Bulldogs, Weekes also produced great SC numbers with 30 points in base, heaps of tackle breaks and a try assist to boot. His DPP is tricky for SC as is the availability at 5/8 (where many already have Brown and Galvin) and fullback (where it’s the gun show). But if I were trying to get out of Cam Munster I would consider Weekes as a cash play (scheduled to increase $100K in two rounds) who also plays round 13. Buy.

HOLD

* Josh Curran 2RF/FRF $541,700 - Owners are starting to lose patience with Josh Curran (three-game average of 51.7) but he plays the next two big byes and will be important for both even if he’s not in your 17 every week.

* Nicho Hynes HFB $1,090,200 - Looks a certainty for Origin and therefore misses 4/8 games over Origin. But he’s neck and neck with Edwards as the best player in SuperCoach this year and will be tough to buy back given the enormous price.

* Valentine Holmes CTW $653,300 - Popular sell this week given the five-round average of 58 and looming Origin series. But Holmes is a great of SuperCoach, has a great base, kicks goals and has scored the fourth most points of any player this year. He also has the best bye schedule of any Origin player, missing just 3/8 games over the Origin period provided he backs up.

* Harry Grant HOK $665,200 - Like Holmes, Grant has the equal best bye schedule of Origin players and is ideally a hold.

STAGGS FRACTURES RIB

The Broncos have suffered another injury blow with Kotoni Staggs ruled out of Sunday’s derby clash against the Titans.

Staggs’ hopes of playing in Origin I have been dealt a crushing blow after suffering a fractured rib in last week’s Magic Round win over Manly.

Staggs is expected to miss two games, ruling him out of calculations for the Blues for their series opener against Queensland on June 5.

The Broncos are hopeful Staggs will be back for their round 14 clash against the Sharks.

“It is an injury that you can play with and we know that Kotoni is a tough player but l’ve taken that decision out of his hands,” Broncos coach Kevin Walters said.

“He will be far better to miss this week and then let it continue to heal over the bye round before we get back into it against the Sharks in Round 14.

“Indigenous Round is really special to Kotoni and the whole team will go out there and make sure we deliver a big performance for him and our supporters.”

ROOSTER GUN OUT

Sydney Roosters utility Connor Watson has been dealt a fresh blow with a throat injury that could sideline him for up to a month, ruling him out of a potential NSW State of Origin debut in game one.

The 27-year-old suffered a reoccurrence of a throat cartilage injury he had in 2022 at Roosters training this week as the team prepares to face the Raiders on Saturday.

The popular utility has been a smokey for the NSW State of Origin side considering his form for the Roosters this season after only just returning to the field from a long injury lay off.

“He got a knock in his throat, which happened previously to him as well, so it was a similar thing and he’s going to miss I think three or four weeks,” said Roosters captain James Tedesco.

“That’s disappointing.

“He’s been awesome for us, his versatility.

“Last year he didn’t play a game but he was in rehab everyday just smashing himself, so to see him come through that injury, he’s just a footy player. He’s played in a lot of different positions for us and he’s been one of our best pretty consistently.”

MOSES WON’T PLAY, ORIGIN DOOR OPEN

Parramatta star Mitchell Moses is set to miss the Eels game against South Sydney on Saturday night, sounding the death-knell to his hopes of a State of Origin recall.

Moses has been sidelined with a foot problem for more than two months but remained in contention for the NSW side pending his return from injury.

However, it is understood he is set to sit to miss the Rabbitohs game, robbing him of the opportunity to impress Michael Maguire as the Blues coach prepares to name the first side of his tenure.

Moses’ absence means there is a five-way shootout this weekend for two spots in the halves. Cronulla playmaker Nicho Hynes is a near certainty to be selected after leading the Sharks to the top of the ladder, while the other spot is a race between Matt Burton, Jarome Luai, Luke Keary and Cody Walker.
