“The centre is poised to have surgery this week which will see him miss the early rounds of the season.

“It’s a minor set-back for the teenage workhorse but his impressive work throughout the pre-season has him positioned well ahead of his return to play.

Best is currently the third most popular player in KFC SuperCoach at almost 50 per cent ownership but his popularity will plummet following this news.

Best was virtually assured a left centre spot for Round 1 prior to his injury, with first grade regulars Jesse Ramien and Shaun Kenny-Dowall having left the club.

The Central Coast junior weighs in at a hefty 103kg and showed in three games last year he is not physically intimidated by playing against seasoned men in the NRL (rare for an 18-year-old).

Jayden Brailey had a planta fascia (foot) concern in pre-season but will trial this weekend.
