Corey Parker’s plan to turn Broncos into KFC SuperCoach musts

KFC SuperCoach “God” Corey Parker has a plan up his sleeve to turn the likes of Payne Haas and David Fifita into pointscoring machines.

Former Broncos warhorse Corey Parker has turned up the heat on the club’s forward pack, calling on them to work better as a team in 2020 instead of being individual superstars.

During the club’s end-of-season review last year, just days after their record 58-nil loss to Parramatta, Broncos bosses identified that individually, their forwards were talented.

Collectively though, they needed to be better, according to Parker.

The call to action comes as Parker, now assistant coach at the club, has been working with the Brisbane pack to start adding an offload into their running games.

No Broncos forward threw as many offloads as Parker during his prime, averaging 3.2 a game in 2014 and finishing the season with 70.

In comparison, Fox Sports Lab statistics revealed Payne Haas had just 17 offloads in 2019 and David Fifita just 15.

The rampaging Tevita Pangai Jr managed 55 offloads last season, but Parker is working to turn the entire barnstorming Brisbane squad into short passing professionals and share the workload in 2020.

“Individually, it’s fair to say that we have some pretty talented guys in that forward pack,” Parker said.

“Matt Lodge, Payne Haas, David Fifita, Tevita, Joe Ofahengaue, (Thomas) Flegler, (Patrick) Carrigan.

“These guys individually are very good.

“But collectively, as a group, we identified we can be a lot better.

“I’ve really enjoyed that role (coaching) this pre-season.”

Nines coach Kurt Richards has revealed Parker’s role had been in helping Haas and Fifita with their ability to use the ball in traffic for the upcoming short-form game.

Despite their collective 227kg might, the two Bash Brothers — Haas and Fifita — have speed to burn and an offload would add yet another string to their bow.

The Nines tournament, starting Friday night, marks exactly one month until the Broncos NRL season opener with the Cowboys in Townsville and the blowtorch is now well and truly on the players to lock down a starting spot.

“It’s going to be a big month of footy,” Parker said.

“There’s plenty of spots open to play for.

“Anthony Seibold has been pretty vocal in that and we’ll wait and see what transpires from that.

“We’ve got four games (with the Nines and the trial matches), four opportunities for 35 guys to stake their claim for round one and then we’ll see what happens from there.”
