Storm star Cameron Munster denies biting Paul Alamoti in ugly NRL grand final moment

Cam Munster at centre of biting allegation

Melbourne superstar Cameron Munster has hit back at claims he bit Penrith centre Paul Alamoti in the dying stages of Sunday night’s grand final, saying: “Obviously the judiciary will sort that out but I can put my hand on my heart and tell you I didn’t bite him.”

Munster was placed on report by referee Ashley Klein late in the second half of the Panthers’ win after Alamoti made an on-field complaint against the five-eighth.

Alamoti told Triple M NRL that he felt a bite but Munster insisted there was “nothing in it”. He added: “I’ve done a lot of things and I put my hand up when I’m in the wrong.

“I’m honest with that stuff. And I can guarantee that I didn’t bite.

“Unfortunately, he’s made an allegation. I spoke to Ash (Klein) about it and he said that he had to put it on report.

“If someone makes an allegation, they have to regardless of what the decision is, he’s got to put it on report.”

The allegation capped an unhappy night for Munster and the Storm, who were strangled out of the contest by the Panthers as they made it four premierships in succession.

Alamoti had a night to remember after starting in the centres for the Panthers and later being moved to the wing when Brian To’o was forced from the field.

He excelled in both roles and stood by his claims that he was bitten by Munster.

“I felt a bite from Munster,’’ Alamoti said.

“I’m an advocate for the rules and the rules are the rules.”

Alamoti’s claims could result in Munster missing the start of next season given he is expected to undergo surgery in the off-season on hip injuries that have plagued him throughout the year.

Any ban could have been served in the Pacific Championships for Australia but Munster was unlikely to play due to his injury problems, meaning any suspension will carry over into next season.

Munster appears certain to fight the allegations given the vehement way he protested his innocence on the field after full-time.

St George Illawarra five-eighth Kyle Flanagan was the last player found guilty of biting Canterbury’s Stephen Crichton in August.

Although he was adamant he didn’t bite the Bulldogs skipper, Flanagan was banned for four weeks. In the aftermath, the NRL judiciary warned that any player found guilty of biting faced a hefty suspension.

If the Storm are forced to head to the NRL judiciary they will do so with trepidation given they have enjoyed little luck there in recent weeks.

Giant forward Nelson Asofa-Solomona missed the grand final after being found guilty of a high tackle at the judiciary on Monday night.
