Will Cody Walker and Nathan Cleary survive the axe ahead of Origin II

After the Blues’ collapse in State of Origin I there’s one question on everybody’s lips — will Brad Fittler stay loyal to Cody Walker and Nathan Cleary or will he ring in the changes.

Fittler's big halves dilemma

Should Brad Fittler stay loyal to Cody Walker and Nathan Cleary or change things up in a desperate attempt to level the State of Origin series?

It’s the question every footy fan is asking after the Blues loss to Queensland last week and the Monday Bunker crew were no exception.

With Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney beating the door down and Walker and Cleary producing an indifferent showing in Game I Fittler has a big decision to make.

Tim Gilbert was in favour of keeping Walker.

“One thing about NSW is when they lose a game, be it by four or forty, a lot of people want to chuck the baby out with the bathwater,” Gilbert said.

“I say to people who want to drop Cody Walker – he’s already had his toughest test, he’s already played an Origin in Brisbane.

“He’s a prodigious talent, Wayne Bennett, the best coach of all time, said he’s the most naturally gifted player he’s ever seen.”

Paul Crawley argued that Fittler himself had heaped the pressure on Walker by dragging him in the 57th minute of Queensland’s 18-14 win.

“Our halves were totally outplayed. Brad Fittler, for the last week, has tried to deny he hooked Cody Walker,” Crawley said.

“He hooked Cody Walker and said afterwards he couldn’t get into the game. Josh McGuire was sitting on the bench yelling across to Cody Walker that the coach didn’t have trust in him.

“It’s not just the critics who put pressure on Cody Walker, it’s Brad Fittler by taking him off.”

Fatima Kdouh believes the Blues will stick with Cleary due to a promise Fittler made to Phil Gould before last year’s series.

“I think he’ll stick with Nathan Cleary, I think there’s a lot more going on, the relationship Brad Fittler has with Gus Gould and Ivan Cleary in particular will influence his decision.

“We both know Freddy, he’s not the type to go back on his word.

“He said to Gus Gould if he picked him (Cleary) he was going to stick with him and I think he’s going to stick with him.

“I also think Freddy is mad enough to pick James Maloney at number six.”

The Blues will name their team for next Sunday’s Origin II clash in Perth this weekend.
