Tom Trbojevic admits surprise at centre switch for NSW

It’s another one of Brad Fittler’s game two gambles — Tom Trbojevic at right centre for the must-win clash on Sunday night. But the Manly fullback isn’t one to back down from a challenge.

He admits he is “surprised” to be chosen at centre but NSW star Tom Trbojevic is ready to confront the boldest challenge of his representative career.

Manly fullback Trbojevic hasn’t played right centre with the Sea Eagles since 2016, and his only two games in the position recently came in Tests last year for Australia against New Zealand and Tonga.

It is a calculated risk from Fittler, who will also play Canberra five-eighth Jack Wighton out of position in the other centre spot.

“I was a little bit surprised but I’m really thankful to be selected,” Trbojevic said. “With Teddy (James Tedesco) there, I wasn’t going to crack the No.1 jersey. I just had to do my best to find another jersey somewhere and that’s at centre for this year.

“It (playing centre) is a bit of a change but it’s a position I am familiar with. I have played there before.

“It is a bit different defensively but I will have to work hard and I’m sure once we go into Sunday we will all know what we’re doing.

“Defending in the line is a big change and there are a few things you’ve got to do. That’s the biggest thing I will be working on this week, to get that right. The attack will come.”

The player known as Turbo has played just four NRL games this season after twice breaking down with hamstring injuries.

Any self-doubts over his immediate future were extinguished with a scintillating performance for Manly against St George Illawarra on Sunday, when he ran for an astonishing 333m.

“I haven’t played much footy this year, so Freddy has shown a lot of faith in me,” Trbojevic said.

“Most of the boys have played half a year of footy and I’ve only played three-and-a-half games, so I’m feeling really good.

“It’s awesome, mate. It was a great opportunity for me to put this jersey on last year and to get another opportunity. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s really special.”
