THEY pinch our star players, try to steal our rising juniors and now rotten Queensland has the audacity to try and set-up camp in a NSW training facility.
Can you believe it?
The Daily Telegraph can reveal today that the Maroons have discussed shifting their State of Origin base from Coolum on the Sunshine Coast to Coffs Harbour, on the NSW north coast.
The only problem is NSW won the race for the Novotel Elite Training Centre in Coffs Harbour.
NSW will set-up at the Novotel - the former Camp Wallaby - six days before both games in Brisbane this year. The Blues will banish Coogee this year and be based inside Sydney Olympic Park for the ANZ Stadium game.
Queensland’s regular home base, Clive Palmer’s Coolum Resort, just laid off 200 staff, with Maroons management fearing they may have to shift for the 2014 interstate series.
And they had their eye on Coffs Harbour. Finally though, NSW has secured a victory.
One source close to Origin said: “It has been discussed by Queensland, I can’t believe they would even contemplate moving their base into NSW but they did. Thankfully NSW got in first and grabbed the training facility at Coffs.’’
Queensland has had no shame in luring NSW-born stars north of the border.
Blues-born Queensland stars include Greg Inglis, Israel Folau, Mat Rogers, Billy Moore, Wayne Bartrim, Michael Crocker, Robbie O’Davis and Sam Thaiday.
Some of Australia’s best sporting teams have used the Novotel for camps.
They include South Sydney, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Sydney Roosters, Brisbane Broncos, Soceroos, Newcastle United, Central Coast Mariners, Matildas, Hawthorn, Essendon, Geelong, Olympic volleyball gold medallists Natalie Cook and Kerrie Potthurst and the Wallabies.
QRL chief executive Robert Moore said the Maroons had “three or four options’’ if they in fact were forced to shift from Coolum.
“They are in southeast Queensland,’’ Moore said. “They all meet the criteria.
“I have been there (Novotel Elite Training Centre) but the NSW boys are using it and it’s not something we would consider.’’
Before both Suncorp Stadium matches, NSW will arrive in Coffs Harbour on Wednesday and leave for Brisbane on the Monday before Wednesday night’s game.
NSW used to complete the bulk of their training at Coogee Oval, a public field. The squad will now have privacy inside the Coffs Harbour facility.
One source said: “The players loved Coogee but used to get fans walking onto the training field, during training, asking for autographs. The boys love the public and the public’s love of Origin but need to have their private time in an enclosed facility, like Queensland do at Coolum.’’
The Elite Training centre’s website says: “The ideal destination for pre-game base camps, team re-groupings, end-of-season or mid-season getaways for both elite and amateur athletes. Our facilities have been designed to cater for a number of sporting groups and the training field can be modified to suit all requirements.’’
