The greatest State of Origin players who never played a Test match for Australia.

15. MICHAEL HAGAN: As a utility he was one of the best around, winning a premiership at the Bulldogs.

14. BRETT HODGSON: There wasn’t much of him but he was a class player in an era of outstanding custodians.

13. BEN TE’O: Premiership-winning backrower who must have come close to selection.

12. DARRYL BROHMAN: I have no doubt that if not for a stray elbow in 1983, the Big Marn would have played for his country a few weeks later.

11. PHIL BLAKE: He was a shock omission from the 1982 Kangaroo tour considering he’d burst on to the scene that year, scoring 27 tries for Manly.

10. MARIO FENECH: Was given the nickname “Test match” and would have reached his goal in 1989 if not for an untimely broken hand.

9. MICHAEL ENNIS: Made an impact at every NRL club he played at and would not have looked out of place in the green and gold.

8. KEVIN HASTINGS: Horrie won RLW player of the year three times and also the prestigious Rothmans Medal.

7. DAVID PEACHEY: The scintillating fullback scored 117 tries for the Sharks during an outstanding 14-year career.

6. GRAEME WYNN: Toured with the 1980 Kangaroos to New Zealand but missed out on Test selection.

5. ANTHONY MUNDINE: In 1999, when at the peak of his powers, Choc was desperately unlucky to be overlooked. If you don’t believe me, just ask him.

Whatever your opinion, you can’t deny Mundine’s talent. Image: David Kapernick.

4. PAUL LANGMACK: Gifted backrower who toured with the 1986 Kangaroos as a 21-year-old.

3. PETER KELLY: Hard-as-nails front-rower who was a key figure during the Dogs of War era in the 1980s.

2. MICK POTTER: It’s hard to believe that a two-time Dally M player of the year doesn't get the opportunity to play Test football.

1. STEVE EDGE: As a ball-winning hooker, there were none better. If ever a player was worthy of representing his country, it’s this five-time premiership-winning captain.
