MAROONS player Sam Thaiday stunned commentator Brad Fittler speechless last night when he summed up Queensland’s State of Origin win with a colourful sex joke.
In response to a question from Fittler, Thaiday described the win as “a bit like losing your virginity — it wasn’t nice but we got the job done”.
Fittler was so taken off guard that he said “I’m not sure if I’ve got a second question”.
The gag came only moments after Queensland scored a 6-4 victory and was broadcast live to millions — but not everyone was laughing.
The fierce NSW supporters at news.com.au sister publication The Daily Telegraph slammed the joke as “filthy” on its front page and splashed with the headline “Sam Vileday”.
The Huffington Post was similarly offended, calling the line the “most tasteless sport thing ever”, while former NSW prop Robbie Kearns said it was “a bit out of line”.
“I wasn’t too sure whether it was last night’s game or we were talking about (something you were more likely to hear) 30 years ago,” Kearns told SEN. “I’m sure something will come of that. It will be interesting to see what happens.”
It was funny but I can get why Thaiday's post match comment has been criticised.

If Read said same after an ABs test he'd get slaughtered.
If Sam Thaiday said that on English TV he would have been fined Thousands of Pounds

Others on Twitter saw the funny side, including comedian Dave Hughes.

Hopefully criticism will have absolutely no impact on Sam Thaiday. We need more characters in rugby league - desperately.

The Thaiday interview popped the cherry on top.
Well i thought that was a dull #Origin ... until Sam Thaiday's interview

The Daily Telegraph also brought the Family First party into the discussion. Predictably, they were not impressed.
“I’m shocked that Mr Thaiday would bring sex into the discussion over a game of rugby league, especially because he is a family man,” spokesman Phil Jobe said.
“I think his choice of words were not only offensive but in bad taste. To call them wild and crude is not overstating the point.”
Thaiday will be shocked by the reaction this morning given there was barely a ripple when he used a version of the same gag earlier this season.
In a post-match interview with Fittler after his club side the Brisbane Broncos defeated the Dragons in April, Thaiday was asked about being denied a try when he was held up over the line.
“It was like almost losing your virginity. That’s what it was like. I was so close but I didn’t get there,” he said.
“Just doesn’t count?” asked Fittler
“Nah it doesn’t count,” replied Thaiday.
The 30-year-old was reportedly sticking to his guns today, telling Channel Seven: “Not sorry at all, you can’t please everybody.”

“I could stand there and give a boring interview, straight down the line, chuck in a few cliches, but I thought I’d be different and toss something else up,” he added, in an interview with Channel Nine outside the Queensland hotel. “I’m living with it ... it was pretty funny I thought.”
