New South Wales will spare no expense in the lead up to State of Origin II with the Blues planning to stay at Perth’s luxury Rendezvous Hotel.

First it had Michael Jackson’s rhythm, now it will have NSW’s Blues.

The luxury Rendezvous Hotel, the home away from home for rock music’s biggest stars, is where coach Brad Fittler’s men will take up residence ahead of the historic State of Origin match in Perth next month.

Built by late Western Australian business tycoon Alan Bond so he could sit in his penthouse and watch Australia unsuccessfully defend the America’s Cup back yacht race in 1987 off Scarborough Beach outside of Perth.

During its heyday, the hotel attracted some of the world’s most famous musicians including Michael Jackson, Bono, Cher, Robbie Williams, Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue and Eddie Vedder’s Pearl Jam.

Jackson stayed at the hotel during his 1996 HIStory tour and the piano he played for fans still sits in the lobby bar of the 336-room, four-star hotel.

Sharing the same rooms now will be headline acts Tedesco, Mitchell, Cordner, Cook and Trbojevic before Origin II at Optus Stadium on June 23.

Previously known as Observation City, the hotel has undergone several refurbishments — the most recent a $60 million makeover in 2014.

“It was the go-to place for a lot of celebrities back in those days and when you look at where it’s located, you can understand why,” NSW team manager Peter Parr said.

“In those halcyon days around the America’s Cup and Alan Bond, people like that were in Perth. It’s a magnificent spot, a great location, right on the water.

“The location is exactly what Freddy (Fittler) wanted when he was looking for accommodation. It’s near the water and there is plenty of space for players to enjoy the surrounds in their downtime.”

Bond, who died in 2015, built the complex so he could sit in his penthouse and watch the America’s Cup yacht race off Scarborough Beach. It is understood Bond bankrolled the hotel for nearly $100 million.

“Built in the mid-1980s to capitalise on the America’s Cup defence, the hotel courted controversy from the beginning amid allegations of bribery and corruption,” a media report about the hotel read.

Fittler chose Scarborough Beach to replicate NSW’s successful preparation last year when the team stayed on the beach at Coogee in Sydney’s east.

While at the Rendezvous Hotel, players will enjoy a lobby bar, with Jackson’s grand piano, cafes, restaurants, cascade pool bar and lagoon style pool. It is the only high-rise hotel, standing 18 floors, on the Western Australian sunset coast.

NSW will move from Scarborough Beach into the city of Perth on the Friday before the game.

The Blues will train for the week at the same luxury private school the All Blacks use in the lead up for Bledisloe clashes in Perth.

The Hale School is set on a 48-hectare site at Wembley Downs, a ten minute drive from the NSW team hotel in Scarborough beach. It is the oldest private school in Western Australia.

NSW officials have visited the boarding school and agreed it would be a one-stop training venue.

The school will offer an eight-lane 25 metre heated swimming pool, a ten-lane pool, gymnasium, basketball court, badminton, volleyball, squash, rock climbing, weights room, rowing room, 16 tennis courts, four Australian rules field, five cricket fields, four basketball courts, four soccer fields, cross country track, two rugby league fields, track and field facilities and hockey field.

One of the two beautifully manicured rugby league fields will be totally dedicated to NSW.

The Hale website claims the school “will always provide state of the art facilities that meet the needs of the modern world.”

NSW learned of the amazing facilities through Blues doctor Nathan Gibbs, who has a contact involved with the school.

“I’ve been told the All Blacks are going to use for the Bledisloe Cup over there,” said NSW team manager, Peter Parr said. “They will use the facilities as well.

“There are great facilities there. There are several grounds but they are preparing one for us. They have said they work put a lot of work into the one field and dedicate that to us.

“They will keep school traffic off it leading up to us getting there.

“There’s a gym, Olympic size swimming, the whole box and dice. We would be able to train, weights, recovery, all in the one place. It’s close to where we are staying and we know the fields are good.”

The Blues will train at Hale three times during the lead-up to Origin II on June 23.
