Cameron Munster trains at fullback fuelling rumours of positional switch for Origin decider

Kevin Walters wasn’t giving up and neither were the Queensland players. But sightings of Cameron Munster training at fullback suggests the Maroons are set to pull a surprise for the Origin decider.

Cameron Munster has trained at fullback for the Maroons in the first indication that he will be Queensland’s new No.1.

Munster was peppered with high kicks from Cowboys playmaker Michael Morgan during the Maroons first training session ahead of next week’s State of Origin decider in Sydney.

Coach Kevin Walters remains tight-lipped about who will play the fullback role ahead of an announcement later in the week.

Even the players kept quiet on Tuesday when asked about the position announcement, claiming they were yet to be told.

Maroons enforcer Joe Ofahengaue said Munster would be a real threat if picked at fullback.

“I don’t know what positions everyone was playing (at training),” Ofahengaue said.

“(If Munster is picked) he’s a runner and a threat everywhere.

“Just playing against Munster you don’t know what he’s going to do.”

Walters admitted on Monday he was considering four options at fullback — Munster, Morgan, Moses Mbye and debutant Corey Norman.

Munster is considered by many the player most likely to worry NSW, with former Blues coach Gus Gould on Monday saying he feared of the Storm star wearing No.1 in Game Three next Wednesday.

However, former Queensland fullback Matt Bowen, who was thrown into the job in the 2005 decider, said he believed Morgan would be given the crucial role, but Mbye was also up to the challenge.

“I think whoever they put at fullback will do a good job,” Bowen said. “Either Morgo or Mbye will be put up the back there.

“Morgan started out as a fullback so he’s got that experience and he’s been playing pretty well there in the centres.”

Morgan was on light running duties during training at Langlands Park.

The Cowboys playmaker continues to go through the concussion protocol after being knocked out by Dragons forward Tariq Sims last Friday night.

The Maroons will also welcome into camp South Sydney utility Ethan Lowe and Gold Coast Titan AJ Brimson on Wednesday after they were named as 18th and 19th man.

Both players have been part of Queensland’s Emerging Origin program and will cover any potential injuries.
