NSW legend Brad Fittler wants to become a long-term Origin coach, and he has the backing of the state’s powerbrokers.
Fittler is contracted as Blues coach until the end of 2022, having had his deal extended before the start of this year’s series.
But after winning three of his four Origin series in charge, he is keen to stay around in the NSW system longer.
“I love the job, and I also get to do a lot of other stuff with the job and hopefully we can build on that,” Fittler said.
“I’ve got one more year and we agreed leading into this series.
“I really appreciate the faith shown in me and my coaching staff.
“There is so much we can do, and I want to help. I feel like that is a great passion of mine.
“I think it helps with what we are doing in Origin, that the players see that we are trying to help to add value.”
NSWRL chairman Dave Trodden believes Fittler is destined for a sustained and successful stint as Blues Origin coach.
“The board had no hesitation in extending Freddy’s tenure until the end of 2022 before the 2021 series started and their faith and confidence in him has been well and truly repaid,” Trodden said.
“Freddy’s record with the Blues speaks for itself – three series from four attempts - but his passion for NSW extends well beyond the team and State of Origin.
“He has been on a mission to unite the state since his days as a pathways coach and throughout his Hogs journeys over the years; and the Blues are reaping the benefits of that on and off the field.”
