Marsden SHS has inched its way into the competition lead after a bruising 28-4 win over a fired-up Wavell SHS in round 4 Langer Trophy action.

Marsden led 12-nil after six minutes, then entered into a pitchforked battle before easing out the other side and sprinting to a win with three second half tries.

When Marsden hooker Cory Pearse, Marsden to the core, scored his team’s fifth try he celebrated by tossing the ball in the air and then diving into the arms of celebrating teammates.

The win was not as easy as the score indicated.

There was a crucial moment with 18 minutes remaining when Wavell prop Ben Uini was sin-binned for 10 minutes and while he was off the field Marsden scored two tries.

One came within 60 seconds of Uini’s departure, the other 60 seconds before he re-entered the fray.

In that period Marsden edge forward Cairo Ruri plunged over next to the posts, and impressive Marden No.13 Lewis Symonds drove low and hard at the line.

As willing as Wavell were, there was no coming back from the 22-4 deficit.

After Marsden’s shock start to lead 12-nil, and then a stagnant period where the match hung in the balance, critically it was Wavell SHS who struck first in the second half.

Five minutes after halftime Wavell winger Carlos Ka burrowed over in the corner after his halfback Zac Herdegen had engineered the try with a long face ball toward the sideline. It was a class pass from an excellent playmaker.

At 12-4 down, Wavell clung to the cliff face. While their handling would not have pleased their coach Paul Stanley, Wavell were up for the challenge, playing percentage football and backing themselves in defence.

Even being down 12-0 after six minutes to not deter Wavell who dug in for the long haul.

But you sensed if Marsden reduced the penalties and improved its handling, it had enough firepower to burst to the winners post and so it was, even if they were advantaged by Uini’s sin-binning.

Walters Cup wrap

Marsden SHS winger Antonio Okustina scored the winning try six minutes from fulltime after a gripping tussle with Wavell SHS in Walters Cup action.

Marsden forward Taylan To’a helped him into a gap and the roving Okustina didn’t miss his mission, bursting ahead to score. Marsden won 16-12.

But a turnover from the kick-off thrust Wavell into an attacking position, compounded when No.7 Timahna Tandy forced a goal-line drop out three minutes from fulltime.

But a dropped ball released air out of the balloon and Marsden SHS were home, 16-12.

Wavell had worked so hard for its first try, scored by courageous No.13 Hayden Smith who had been monstered when carrying the ball throughout the first half.

But he fought hard all game, including to cross the line early in the second half, and despite Marsden hooker Cooper Young’s enterprising solo try carting his side back to 12-6 minutes later, Wavell were in the match.

It was then 12-all when Azariah Toki-Matauri drove over for Wavell.

Earlier, Marsden SHS opened the scoring 15 minutes courtesy of a stunning 50m run from edge forward Taylan To’a after a brutal first quarter of the game featuring bruising defence from both packs.

Marsden tended to dominate the ruck with its gang tackles when Wavell ran one out, but Wavell SHS still gained parity by using the ball well around five-eight ace Azariah Toki-Matauri.

Wavell won their opening game of the Langer Trophy season in a big way against Caloundra State High, but have been on a form slump since with back-to-back losses to Mabel Park and Ipswich State High before the mid-season break.

Salei said while his side had “missed the jump a bit’’ this season, Wavell would fire back and build on its early season record.

“We have sat down as a cohort and spoken about what we want to see in the back end of the season,’’ Salei said.

“We have a great bunch of boys, great coaching staff, and we will get back into the groove.’’

While Marsden State High were on red alert for a Wavell rebound, Marsden’s form across the opening three rounds also gives Wavell reason for concern.

The Coby Black-led Makos will have confidence entering the game after starting the season undefeated, with a draw against Palm Beach Currumbin in the opening round the only blemish on their record.
