PLAYERS TO WATCH

Josiah Pahulu (Ipswich SHS)

The Ipswich SHS middle forward is as fit as a fiddle and as strong as an ox, with his damaging tackles and powder keg runs leading Ipswich SHS at both ends of the field. Pahulu scored one of the great front row grand final tries last Wednesday, a real “follow me boys’’ effort.

Henry Teutau (Ignatius Park)

The towering prop forward has been an inspiring leader with his powerhouse runs into the teeth of rival packs. Because of his height and long limbs, he is also capable of second phase ball as well as getting his team forward.

Jamal Shibasaki (Ignatius Park)

Shibasaki is one of the best in the business, an outstanding ball running No. 13 or edge forward who is having a season to remember. A key player in the Blackhawk’s rise into the Meninga Cup grand final, Shibasaki then spearheaded Ignatius Park College to victory at the time honoured Confraternity Shield where he was also named Player of the Carnival.

Tre Fotu (Ipswich SHS)

Queensland schoolboys centre Fotu will resume his battle with Ignatius Park ace Jamel Shibasaki in the decider.

It was Fotu, playing centre for Souths Logan, who was largely responsible for quelling Shibasaki’s influence in the Meninga Cup grand final in May when Shibasaki was playing for the Blackhawks. Shibasaki will play a bit tighter in this match as a No. 13, but if he strays wide, then watch for the match-up.

Matt Hunter (Ignatius Park)

Hunter is an Australian under 19 touch player who has been at the college since grade 7. He has worked hard on his game over the last two years which has resulted in a development contract with the Cowboys. Hunter missed the Blackhawks Meninga Cup side this season, but worked hard and used this as motivation to improve and he has had a great year. He is a great leader at school and in the team.

Tyler Peckham-Harris (Ipswich SHS)

Is there a footballer on either side in better form? Maybe not. The diminutive fullback is having a wonderful campaign, iced by two stunning performances in both the semi-final and grand final. He is dangerous like Preston Campbell used to be, ducking and weaving with his pace. He is proving there is still a place in league for little men.

Tekelu Mene (Ignatius Park)

Blink and you will miss him. In the true tradition of North Queensland flyers, Mene is a try scoring machine and it will be red alert time when he handles the ball. But Mene is also a powerful dummy half runner coming out of his own territory, so Ipswich will need to get their bodies committed and in front of him or he could hurt them.

Gabriel Satrick – and Tommy Luhrman (Ipswich SHS)

You cannot mention one without the other. Yes, Satrick is the more obvious threat when he comes on, with his speed around the ruck the most potent in the state at schoolboy level. But starting dummy half Luhrman is no mug either, and it was Lurhman who set up a critical try in the grand final. We have also seen Tommy run 50m for tries, so he can motor.

Oliva Iaulualo (Ipswich SHS)

The big right edge forward is having a whale of a season and his form has shown no signs of abating the bigger the matches get for Ipswich SHS.
