IF South Sydney halfback Adam Reynolds plays all over North Queensland superstar Johnathan Thurston in Townsville on Friday night, it may just be due to some inside information.

Thanks to the arrival of former Cowboys assistant David Furner at Redfern this season, Reynolds has received countless inside tips on the mercurial Thurston.

From playing style, work ethic and mindset, the Rabbitohs halfback is now well equipped on all things “JT”.

“He is probably the best we’ve seen in our game, so to get a bit of knowledge from someone who has coached him is very welcoming,” Reynolds told The Daily Telegraph.

“Dave (Furner) has achieved a lot. He has been up north with the Cowboys and they’ve won a comp up there.

“Working with JT he has got a fair insight into what works. You can tell JT goes about things very thoroughly and always at 100 per cent and it just shows how he is on the field.”

Reynolds may have a greater understanding of what makes Thurston tick, but he knows he still has some way to go before he can be on the same page as the champion Queenslander.

Furner has pushed Reynolds to learn from Thurston, but ultimately maintain his own style.

“(Dave) doesn’t want me to change my game too much,” he said.

“JT is JT for what he does and not everybody can replicate what he does. It’s pretty hard, so it’s just about working on my strengths and trying to get my weaknesses better.”

Souths have started the season slowly, but Reynolds still has his sights set on adding to his two Origin games from last season.

Before he can take on the might of the Maroons, though, the No.7 is fully focused on reviving the Rabbitohs’ NRL fortunes.

“The desire is always there to get better,” he said.

“There is the disappointment of last year and the way we finished up, so for me it’s just about starting on a good note this season.

“Touch wood there is no injuries and I can get a bit of consistency around myself.”
