The NRL judiciary have cleared Gold Coast fullback Jayden Campbell of any wrongdoing after an incident which has left Parramatta winger Sean Russell in hospital with a punctured lung.

On Monday afternoon the Eels confirmed Russell, who score a first-half hat-trick of tries against the Titans on Sunday, was nursing two broken ribs and the punctured lung as a result of Campbell’s knees-first tackle while attempting to stop a try.

“Russell has spent the night in hospital after suffering the injuries while scoring his third try in yesterday‘s win over the Gold Coast Titans,” a club statement said.

“The Club will be monitoring Sean over the following week to assess his recovery schedule.

“At this stage, the Club is unsure when he will return but will provide an update when his prognosis is clearer.”

Russell could be sidelined for to two months and the decision not to charge Campbell under the NRL’s revised judiciary has been seen as a dangerous precedent.

His injury also leaves the Eels without three of their wing options following long term knee injuries to Maika Sivo and Haze Dunster.

The Penrith Panthers have also suffered a blow with forward Moses Leota‘s shoulder injury set to sideline him for up to 10 weeks.

Leota fractured the glenoid in his left shoulder while making a tackle late in the opening round win over Manly last Thursday night. .

“The affected area is the shoulder socket component of the scapula, which means the 26-year-old will commence a rehabilitation program and be sidelined for 8-10 weeks,” a club statement said.

The reigning premiers are also without star halfback Nathan Cleary until after Round 3.
