The South Sydney Rabbitohs contract drama with inspirational skipper Adam Reynolds will not go away.

The same fans who successfully ran an online petition to keep Alex Johnston last year are now running a campaign to support their 30-year-old halfback getting a multi-year deal.

Reynolds was outstanding for the Rabbitohs against Manly at Brookvale Oval before being forced off with concussion.

Well over 1000 fans have signed the petition on change.org.

This story is going to get bigger as the season progresses when the struggling clubs start looking at recruitment options.

Imagine Reynolds in a Broncos jersey. He is one of the few halves in the game who could fix Kevvie Walters’ problems.

Manly lock in DCE succession plan

It is not all doom and gloom at Manly Sea Eagles despite two losses to kick off the season.

We can reveal boom five-eighth Josh Schuster has signed a new three-year contract with the club.

The Sea Eagles have also re-signed their outstanding edge forward Sean Keppie to a longterm deal.

These are two of the game’s most outstanding young prospects.

The Schuster contract is special in that it puts to bed rumours he wanted out because he was being held back by Kieran Foran.

The 19-year-old is now under contract until 2024. Interestingly Daly Cherry-Evans comes off in 2023. By that stage Schuster will be ready to take over as the halves leader.

Manly are dreaming big on Josh Schuster.

HIGHLIGHT

Ben Hunt’s stunning game for St George Illawarra, leading the Dragons to victory against the Cowboys in Townsville. Hunt is the most maligned player in the competition because he is on a $1 million plus salary and doesn’t always aim up. Saturday night showed why he is on the big bucks. He now has to do it more consistently.

LOWLIGHT

We have absolutely no sympathy for banned Cronulla Sharks star Bronson Xerri. There are thousands of kids out there who would love to have his ability. There are thousands of young footy players who get injured every week, every season. They don’t all cheat and turn to steroids to speed up their recovery. Surgery and rehab is tough but professional NRL clubs have great welfare systems in place. There are absolutely no excuses.

GUTHERSON GO SLOW

Melbourne Storm are questioning why referee Ashley Klein stopped play when Parramatta Eels skipper Clint Gutherson sat down to get his ankle strapped during a key moment in Thursday night’s blockbuster, giving his exhausted teammates a rest before they took a line drop-out.

Storm’s general manager of football Frank Ponissi was blowing up about it on the sideline. It appeared as though Storm decided to ‘get square’ in the second-half with Ryan Papenhuyzen virtually the same thing as Gutherson.

THE HIGH-FLYERS

At great cost, super coach Craig Bellamy is ensuring Melbourne Storm are ready to go in the grand final rematch with the Panthers on Thursday night. After Thursday night’s brutal game against the Eels, the Storm paid for their own charter flight straight home to Melbourne rather than wait around for a commercial flight the next day.

SPONSOR HONOURED

Bulldogs skipper Josh Jackson wore a specially made training top for the team warm-up on Saturday to honour Gary Johnston, the late boss of Jaycar, who were a major sponsor for years. Gary’s wife Kerry was also a special guest in the Chairman’s Lounge, personally invited by chairman John Khoury.

SHOOSH

Which struggling player has been ringing a head coach from a rival NRL club looking for tips and advice to recapture his best form.

SHOOSH

The sports advisory experts trying to convince NRL clubs that the ARL Commission must look at private equity to survive, last year tried to convince the game to use Greensill Capital as a credit facility. Greensill is now headed for liquidation, owing at least $1.75 billion to creditors. Lucky that advice was ignored.

SPOTTED

Former referees boss Bernard Sutton wearing his new Melbourne Storm polo shirt and sitting in the coach’s box alongside Craig Bellamy and in the dressing room at half-time at Bankwest Stadium on Thursday night.
