KINGS BREAK ALL-TIME CROWD RECORD
The Sydney Kings have become very much major players in Sydney’s highly competitive sporting landscape.
The Kings broke an all-time NBL crowd record on Sunday afternoon against Illawarra Hawks at Qudos Bank Arena with more than17,000 fans.
And CEO Paul Kind, the former NRL marketing and commercial boss, insists there were no freebies.
The crowd was bigger than any AFL Giants home game this year.
It was also bigger than 89 NRL games in Sydney this year. Only 16 NRL games in Sydney drew bigger crowds, eight of those at Bankwest Stadium.
Obviously eight wins from nine games helps.
As does having the Illawarra Hawks’ rookie superstar LaMelo Ball.
This teenager is doing what the Italian Alessandro Del Piero did for the A-League.
It will be interesting to see what effect the basketball resurgence has on cricket’s Big Bash, which lost its novelty appeal over a long and drawn-out tournament last summer.
