NRL 2021: Adam Reynolds could be squeezed out of Souths when he should be lauded at Redfern

Rugby league has become an insensitive game in the salary cap era. No one is safe, no one is secure, no one can feel settled, not even the heart and soul of the game’s proudest club.

He’s not naive, nor unworldly, but Adam Reynolds is finding out the hard way that loyalty in rugby league is rare commodity.

Despite entering his ninth season as South Sydney’s premier halfback, having guided his club to a historic grand final win in 2014, it would appear the Rabbitohs have lost confidence in Reynolds.

Why else would the club offer Reynolds just a one-year contract extension when he wants a new three to four year deal?

Are Souths looking to cut ties with Adam Reynolds?

Is a one-year extension offer insulting to a player who has enjoyed such a decorated career at Redfern? Probably.

Is he dirty at being treated this way? Certainly.

But it’s the insensitive and compassionless game that rugby league has become in the salary cap era.

No one is safe, no one is secure, no one can feel settled, not even the heart and soul of rugby league’s proudest club.

The NRL is ruthless, merciless and pitiless.

Given what he’s achieved at the club, and that he is Souths junior, Reynolds should be a one-club player. He should never wear any other jumper.

A huge favourite among the Souths faithful.

Yet the salary cap dollar only stretches so far, especially when your club includes champion players Latrell Mitchell, Jai Arrow, Dane Gagai, Cameron Murray, Damien Cook and Cody Walker.

Rugby league is a wonderful game, many say the best in the world.

But its heartless side is difficult to digest.

Just ask Adam Reynolds.
