Buzz’s highlights, lowlights, talking points: The brutal combat sport worse than UFC, Manly unearth their next Cherry-Evans

At 31, Daly Cherry-Evans is closer to the end of his career than the start. Thankfully, Manly have a ready-made replacement.

Violence in 500-punch Bare Knuckle bloodbath

Phil “Buzz” Rothfield wraps the week’s sport and reveals the hot sporting news.

HIGHLIGHT

Peter V’landys’ declaration that the NRL is about to get tougher on player misbehaviour and punishing footy stars where it hurts most – via their wallets. Unlike previous NRL bosses, V’landys has a history of backing up his words. This is so long overdue.

LOWLIGHT

We’ve found a combat sport worse than UFC. These ladies, Taylor Starling and Charisa Sigala, fought out a brutal five round bare-knuckle contest in Florida over the weekend. Their battered faces were barely recognisable. It is barbaric and should be outlawed.

THE NEW DCE

Manly have found their next Daly Cherry-Evans. Jamie Humphreys, the son of the club’s CEO Steve Humphreys, played halfback in SG Ball against the Parramatta Eels on Saturday. The Sea Eagles won 30-20 and the brilliant teenager scored two tries and kicked five from five. It will be difficult for his dad to do his next contract but we’re sure Dessie Hasler will sort it out to take away any suggestions of nepotism.

SHOOSH

We’re hearing the NRL is already working on a 17-team draw for 2023 to take to the broadcasters. It will include a match at Suncorp Stadium every weekend.
