NSW skipper Paul Gallen went through his first competitive training session in almost a month as the Blues cranked up their preparations for Wednesday's State of Origin opener.

Gallen and Cronulla teammate Luke Lewis featured in an opposed session against the Sharks' under-20s at a sodden Kogarah Oval.

Gallen has not played since injuring his medial ligament four weeks ago against Newcastle and Lewis has missed the last two games with a shoulder injury.

Both are fully expected to play against the Maroons and back-rower Greg Bird said there was no concerns from the team about their recent lack of action.

"Gal and Lewie are sweet, they both been in first grade for about 12 years and know their bodies," Bird said.

"They've had 10 days to prepare and even though they've not played for a few weeks they will go into this game with no concerns."

With Sydney being hit with a torrential downpour for the last 12 hours, the playing surface at Kogarah was slippery and covered in puddles.

However, Bird said the conditions were not an issue.

"It's a bit wet out there but it could be like this on Wednesday night so it could be a good way to prepare for the game," he said.

NSW coach Laurie Daley has asked some of the Cronulla players to replicate some of the plays used by Queensland during the session which will be the team's last major hit-out before the ANZ Stadium clash.

"This is the last big session we will have," said hooker Robbie Farah.

"We'll have the captain's run on Tuesday and that is usually pretty light and then we will be ready for Wednesday."
