Sam Bremner is set to make a remarkable return to the NRLW after the two-time World Cup winner signed with the Roosters nearly two years since she retired from the league.

Friday’s shock announcement comes less than a week before the Roosters open the new NRLW season against the Knights in a Thursday night blockbuster, with the star fullback coming back after a couple of key players went down with serious injuries.

Veteran fullback Corban Baxter suffered a season-ending ACL injury during last week’s trial game against the Sharks, while experienced winger Brydie Parker will be out for 6-8 weeks with a fractured forearm.

Bremner retired in January 2023 and won’t be rushed back into the side given she hasn’t been training with the Roosters, but simply having her on-board is a huge boost for the Tricolours who have fallen short in the semis in each of the past two seasons.

The Jillaroos legend was named fullback in the 2022 Dally M NRLW Team of the Year in what was her only season with the Roosters.

“Sam has already made a significant impact on the sport, and we are thrilled to welcome her back,” Roosters NRLW coach John Strange said.

“Her decision to come out of retirement speaks volumes about her passion for the game and this club.

“Sam’s skill, experience and leadership are second to none and her presence will be a huge asset to our squad.

“While Sam is incredibly fit and has a very strong footy IQ, we won’t be rushing her into the side before she has had the opportunity to reacquaint herself with the rigours of NRLW training.”
