Newcastle are set to retain whiz kid David Armstrong on a multi-year deal with the Knights fending off interest from the Roosters.
Armstrong has told Newcastle he will take up their two year offer when his deal expires at the end of the season. The Roosters had flagged an interest in the young fullback but he has opted to remain at the Knights.
While his path to the no.1 jersey is blocked by Kalyn Ponga, the prospect of a positional switch to the wing could be his way to play permanent NRL.
Armstrong has been a revelation for the Knights in the absence of Ponga. The 23-year-old has scored five tries from as many games including a treble against the Gold Coast in round 11.
He had an unhappy last start against the Bulldogs and is in doubt for Newcastle’s clash against the Storm with injury.
Fletcher Sharpe is on standby for Armstrong.
The Roosters also expressed an interest in veteran Dane Gagai before Gagai recommitted to Newcastle.
SLOAN EXTENDS TIME AT THE DRAGONS
Tyrell Sloan will remain in the Red-V with the Dragons fullback re-signing until the end of the 2026 season.
Amid persistent speculation surrounding his future, the 22-year-old has inked a new two-year deal with Saints that has taken him off the open market.
Sloan had made no secret of his desire to stay at the club and become the club’s long-term fullback option.
He has so far played 48 games in the Red V since debuting in 2021 and scored 25 tries.
“Tyrell’s an exciting young player who continues to learn and improve every week,” said Dragons coach Shane Flanagan.
“His efforts to improve all parts of his game this year have been really pleasing.
“We’re looking forward to seeing him continue to develop at the Dragons over the coming seasons.”
