The Sydney Roosters’ off-season signing spree has continued with more expected to come after utility Sandon Smith inked a two-year extension.
With Smith signed until at least the end of 2026, the Roosters will look to lock in deals for star centre Joey Manu, prop Tyrell May and back rower Sitili Tupouniua.
Manu, May and Tupouniua hit the open market on November 1 and have drawn plenty of attention from rival outfits.
Smith’s re-signing follows the extension this week of back rower Siua Wong (2026) while centre Billy Smith (2024) and utility Connor Watson (2025) were announced last week ahead of the 2024 season.
Central Coast younster Smith, who was originally on a development deal until the end of 2024, made his NRL debut this season and quickly impressed as back-up hooker to Brandon Smith in his 15 games for the Tricolours.
The 20-year-old Smith and fellow youngster Sam Walker are viewed as the club’s possible long-term halves combination post Luke Keary.
“I love working with Sandon. The talent has always been there and he’s constantly striving to be the best player and person he can be, so it’s really pleasing that he will continue to represent the Sydney Roosters, and not only the Eastern Suburbs, but also the Central Coast,” Roosters coach Trent Robinson said.
Smith is loving life at the Bondi Junction club.
“It’s my home and I’m learning so much from the coaches and senior players every day.
“I’m excited to keep learning, working hard and building my career as a Rooster,” Smith said.
Veteran playmaker Keary, who is also a free agent, is expected to put retirement plans on hold and extend his time at the Roosters beyond 2024 after meeting with Robinson to discuss his immediate future.
